There is a storm brewing, a conflict featuring the forces of capitalism, power, profit, and human excess. Each of us has been unwittingly recruited as part of the legions of consumption through our participation in the wider economic system. Who will stand in opposition to this tide of environmental degradation? How will the forces that will defend our incredibly diverse eco system manifest a credible challenge in this battle for the future?
The answers to these questions start with you!
Global warming is the seminal subject that will confront dozens
of generations to come. Our children will live in a very different world. Water
will be scarce; entire populations displaced in the South Western United
States. In the heartland, once productive swaths of land will lie fallow,
unable to support the farming that once provided the food for our nation. Along our coasts communities will face
increased flooding and ever more violent storms.
If the above sounds like an alarmist statement, IT IS! For too long we, humanity, have accepted the news
on the environment as if each factor was unrelated to the other. Simply but,
human activity with out regard for consequences has brought us to this
crossroads.
Science has brought us the limited ability to address these
concerns, by taking actions to reduce our “footprint”. It is however, the
footprint of the entire world that is of most concern. Even if westerners
reduce their consumption we will be unable to turn the tide on climate change.
Yes we can slow it, but it will take the combined international efforts of
humanity to make a meaningful difference.
What I am suggesting is that now is the time to engage in
global efforts. Letting go of the concepts of insular communities, states,
nations and even cultures.
Generations to come will benefit from such an approach. If we fail, the
survival of dozens of species will be at stake, perhaps even our own. As the voices of unborn generations cry
out for a sustainable planet, Let Us Act.
Today, join an international organization fighting the good
fight; enlist with forces opposing the destruction of the globe. Take action,
organize, protest, and send letters. The time when we can afford to let others
fight this battle is over. Gaia, tearfully,
is issuing a call for her defense, the battle lines are drawn, inaction means
standing in support of the destruction, I know where I stand, Do you?
