Boy Scouts Choose Suicide As Only Acceptable Option

The recent vote by the Boy Scouts of America to accept Gay scouts and reject Gay scout leaders is turning out to be a case of organizational suicide. Across our nation conservative churches, temples and religious organizations have begun the process of distancing themselves from the Boy Scouts. Suddenly scout troops and dens are left without places to meet and engage in scouting.

On the other side of the political spectrum, progressives who would have embraced scouting had the organization embraced total equity, have little or no interest in providing space for an organization that clearly believes that adult homosexuals are predatory and beyond redemption.

This is a classic example of how lacking a moral backbone and attempting to take the “middle road” in matters of social justice leads to organizational destruction. Had the scouts engaged the concept of equity in it’s totality, progressive organizations around the country would be welcoming scouts and their troops with open arms.

It is beyond comprehension to proclaim that Gay scouts are acceptable but Gay adults are not. For an organization that professes to teach principles, such moral ambiguity is self-destructive and hints at the demise of scouting, as we know it.

Today the Boy Scouts of America is paying for its’ lack of both courage and honor;  facing its’ own self inflicted demise.  Clearly this organization no longer possesses the authenticity and character to teach our nations youth to speak their truth, be compassionate, stand their ground, or act in an honorable way..

They are alone and  they deserve it!

I Kissed A Guy And I liked it! - National Action Day

A number of months ago some friends and myself established the  “Old White Guys Confronting Privilege in America Face book page in response to the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Across America “old white guys” put on a Hoodie and took a stand opposing racism.

The idea behind this action was two fold and simple. First as individuals of privilege we have a responsibility to stand for justice and make our voices heard. Second, Historically ,it is often when those of privilege join a civil rights cause that real change begins.

Today the bell tolls for action again. Recent bigoted remarks by the CEO of Chick-Fil-A have created a firestorm that demands action. On Friday August 3 the LGBT community has called for a “National Same Sex Kiss Day”.  Members of this community will kiss at Ckick-Fil-A locations across America.

This is a call for all of us “Old Straight White Guys”, and anyone else who wants to join in, to once again confront our privilege and make a statement in support of love, tolerance and the rich fabric of diversity in America.

To join in, bring along a friend of the same gender and get a photo of a kiss on Friday August 3, 2012. Post the photo at:

Lets see how many straight white men, and others, we can get to come forward and participate in this “I Kissed a Guy and I Liked It”, national action. Join me in this attempt to manifest real change in the world.

I Kissed A Guy And I Liked It

I stood for my beliefs
I supported the concept that all Americans are deserving of respect
I am not homophobic
I believe that actions speak louder than words.
