Multiplicity of the Human Experience

As the Pagan blogisphere explodes with intense debate, as my Occupy brothers and sisters plan actions, as conservatives attack the rights of women, I am engulfed by waves of temptation to act in righteous indignation.

The urge is strong to weigh into the debate brought on by events at Panthea Con this year. Having been there should I, write a post, offer my services as a mediator or attempt to bring a sense of compassion to this debate? I sit and wonder at how when so many are speaking, none are listening. These are issues I have strong opinions on.

If I dive headlong into the fray will my effort make a difference or will I just add another voice to the deafening crowd. Ultimately, while making a few cautious comments, mostly I have chosen to listen. In my silence I can hear the very real pain of many of those involved. In choosing to not be overwhelmed and focused on just this issue I have maintained my ability to view this as part of a broader debate on human dignity. There is a sense of pride that my community is grappling with this issue possibly years before it comes to the forefront of the American experience.

Many I know in the Occupy Movement have called on me to devote all my efforts to this important social activity. My belief in this cause is strong and I have participated in a number of actions. Yet if I give in to the dichotomy of “us vs. them” the 99% vs. the 1%, I wonder if I will loose perspective? Will I step away from my Pagan beliefs, be awash in social activism, loose my ability to see the Divine in all of humanity, to appreciate that the people that make up the 1% have children, families, struggles and a place in our human community? So I act in support when there is something I can contribute returning afterwards to a place of quiet connection to the blessed community in peace.

It seems I can not log on to my computer without being confronted with another story of some extremist who wants to control the choices and bodies of women in the name of their particular brand of “crazy theology”. It is infuriating to witness the accomplishments of decades of progress in women’s rights be thrown under the bus in the name of the Divine. Each day it is tempting to start up my RV and drive to these individuals’ work places and lead the outpouring of disgust at their hate speech. Instead I give my dollars, write some letters and stand with my sisters in defiance of this most disturbing of trends. If I were to take every action I envision in response, my family, my community and personal ability to find grounding would be at risk.

In exchange for takings only measured actions I have maintained my ability to appreciate my daily life, the divinity manifested all around me. Today I am a Pagan activist who stands for inclusion and can appreciate a stand of trees for its diversity. Today I am an Occupy activist who is still able to see the divine manifested in a corporate executive holding the hand of their small child. Today I am a women’s rights activist who still takes time to enjoy the divinity in my wonderful partner, family and community..

By not engaging all my energy in any single issue I maintain my ability to participate in the multiplicity of the human experience.

Activist’s Exhaustion and the Wave of Negativity

There are so many issues in the world that can raise my ire. In just the last week we have been bombarded with:

• Numerous reports of the Komen vs. Planned Parenthood debacle

• A dishonorable effort to tarnish the Girl Scouts with demagoguery

• News that a small-minded news outlet, The Daily Mail, is now the most popular in the world

• The DC police eviction of Occupy protesters

• A Fundamentalist assault on science in primary education

Each of these stories scar my inner being with sadness, revulsion and an urge to “Do Something”, speak out, take corporeal action that will affect change.

As a worker of magic I am tempted to use what few resources I have in “opposition” to these events. Yet there is a disturbing inner tug on my thought process that constantly reminds that to be in opposition is to give credence to these events, even empower them to envelope the world in ever-greater waves of negativity. There are times when all the negativity leaves me feeling chained to the world’s troubles, ever the witness to tragedy, ignorance and suffering.

Often I find myself needing to take a deep breath, step away, and ground myself in who I am and what I believe. In not immediately reacting, I can often find ways to affect change by focusing on the possible positive outcomes of these events. I can choose to be in support of solutions instead of in opposition to most of the events that tarnish humanity.

So today I have given money to Planned Parenthood in positive support of their efforts. This week I have purchased more Girl Scout cookies than I have in the last five years. I have refocused on obtaining news from reliable sources. I will continue my support for the Occupy movement not in opposition to the 1%, but in support of Freedom of Speech and positive change, I have joined the Clergy Letter Project where hundreds of clergy this week around the world will be focusing on how religion and science can be complementary.

These may seem inconsequential differences in my activism, for me however, they make a huge difference. In taking positive action I can avoid the exhaustion that inevitably follows “taking the bait” and being in opposition.

Occupy and the L Word

In General Assemblies across the country it is continually made clear that we are a movement without leaders. In response to this there have been multiple calls from the 1% for us to name leaders who can negotiate in the name of Occupy. This is a clear attempt to defeat Occupy by co-opting its leadership. We are well served by continuing our focus on the consensus process in any and all decision-making.

It is time, however, that we take a long look at our need for leadership skills in the projects we engage in. We need not demonize those who put themselves forward as possessing leadership qualities. Instead of marginalizing these individuals we should embrace them and put their skills to work in support of action items arrived at through the consensus process. Our cause can and will succeed without leaders, but not without Leadership!

It is this idea of "collective leadership" that holds great promise for Occupy. Across this country small Occupy camps look to the larger organizations for leadership in direction, tone and idea development. Occupy Wall Street, LA, Oakland and others are in a position of collective leadership of the movement as a whole whether they embrace this role or not. With leadership comes responsibility and the need to develop a broader prospective. For too long we as a movement have prided ourselves on our lack of leaders at the expense of development of leadership skills within this Occupation.

As someone who has been in a leadership position in a national consensus based organization with a long history, I would suggest that we as a group consider leadership skills as something that will help us obtain our goals. Indeed the organization I am part of could not have survived for 30 years without the leadership skills that many of its members lend to the group.

Should we continue to be leader phobic? Yes, yet it is time to embrace leadership skills in communication, logistics, publishing, and many other areas. Leadership need not be a four-letter word!

National Pagan Coffee Night - Tucson

Once again It will be my pleasure to host a National Pagan Coffee Night. Over the past two weeks members of the Tucson community have been working to obtain a space for this event. If you are in Tucson please join us at 5:30 p.m. on February 7, 2012 at 22nd St./Columbus Library In Tucson, AZ.

This is an opportunity for Pagans from all paths to gather and express their aspirations for the National Pagan Community and share concerns or areas of focus that effect the community as a whole.

Past coffee nights have brought some surprises, join us and contribute to this effort to find out what the community is really concerned about.

Pagan Service Leadership, A Transformative Approach

The national Pagan community is undergoing a rapid transformation from fragmented, unorganized and unilateral action to a more focused approach to the challenges that face the community. Recent events like the unified response to discrimination in Georgia make it clear that the future of our actions will be cooperative in nature.

This new model of “Transformative Pagan Service Leadership” presents an opportunity for the community to achieve substantial progress in the pursuit of Pagan rights. It also will present some challenges for the community leaders involved. Suddenly activists are mindful that it is collective effort that presents the best possibility of effectiveness.

So what will be required to nurture this new ‘Transformative Leadership' model? First we must continue to encourage organizations to rise above self-interest for the good of the collective community. Second we need to assist established organizations in understanding the need for change. Finally, investing our community with a sense of urgency when action is needed.

If we set some clear goals in pursuit of weaving this web of cooperative action future efforts will be more focused and effective. A short list of goals could include:

• Transform the nature of Pagan service projects from process oriented to an outcome based system.

• Systematically harness, recognize and manage knowledge, skills and abilities among activists.

• Encourage organizations to view accomplishments as community wide rather than proprietary in nature.

• Establish organizational funding for collective action in response to community events.

For successful Pagan activism to occur, it requires strategic application that fuels support for vision and strategy by empowering and inspiring others. This model of “Transformative Service Leadership” ultimately requires that the community focuses on the results not the individuals involved.

Are we ready to let go of organizational pride, individual accolades and old rivalries? If we intend to be successful in serving our community we will have to be!

Pagan Candidate Withdraws From Presidential Race

As candidates have dropped out of the race for President of the United States they have generally endorsed those who have continued to run. This phenomenon got me thinking about the significance of these endorsements. Are the former candidates saying they will vote for their new choice; not necessarily. With each new endorsement candidates experience an increase in funding, recognition and ability to have a voice in the national dialogue.

So if an endorsement does not commit your vote, only establishes your support for significant issues as part of the conversation, why not consider endorsing candidates that, while disregarded as irrelevant by the national media, give voice to your views. If alternative communities band together and provide support for candidates who support inclusiveness, open mindedness and civil rights for all can we move the conversation closer to real issues that effect us all?

Months ago some friends of mine jokingly started an “Elect Peter Dybing for President” page on Facebook, as what I believe was a tongue in cheek expression of their desire have real choices in national politics. This page has been the source of some amusement over the past few months. So now it is my turn to withdraw from the race (amused grin), Today I offer my endorsement of both former Governor Johnson of New Mexico and Rocky Anderson. These two individuals best represent my personal views and the views I hold as part of the Pagan Community.

Some may ask, If you endorse both who will you vote for on Election Day? “None of your business”. Be assured, however, my vote will be cast to prevent any religiously conservative candidate from becoming President. In the mean time I will be giving time and funds to those who are talking about the issues I care about.

Desiring the warmth of the returning sun we set out for Fredericksburg Texas. Driving in west Texas requires the ability to see the beauty in stark flat landscapes; Mile upon mile of open space, each small hill teasing us with the expectation of a new vista only to encounter more open country.

I once had a teacher who claimed “you can find the Zen in everything except driving across Texas”. I find myself soothed however by the knowledge that here Gaia is undisturbed, restful and touching the horizon in all directions.

Our overnight stop in the small town of Littlefield Texas left me awash with gratitude towards the residents of this small town. We spent the night in the towns FREE RV Park. Named for the town’s favorite son this park provides all the amenities, power, water and dump station that expensive parks offer, for no charge. In the back of my mind I have always considered Texas as somehow the land of unfriendly small towns that are specious of visitors, I could not have been more wrong. The greatest thing I have experienced so far on this trip is the breaking down of my own perceptions and ideas about places, communities and people.

After a restful night we continued our journey through Texas. As the flat lands gradually gave way to gently rolling hills we approached Sweetwater Texas. In the distance we could see towers looming in all directions. Privately I thought, ‘great some big coal burning power plant close by’. My mind went to the destruction caused by our continued reliance on fusel fuels; my inner Wiccan warrior was incensed.

As we came closer, once again I could have not been more wrong; we were surrounded by a wind farm. These giants of renewable energy, standing in the middle of Texas, as testament to a new ethic in power generation. With each turn of the blades my pre-conceived notions about Texas were wiped away. This modern day Don Quixote was confronted with the fallacy of his own perceptions and came away a better person as a result.

Pagan Road Trip-Post Two, My Sisters Each A Goddess

Time and distance had eroded my memory of the glory of the sleeping Earth, a mother drawn into her self, nurturing the turn of the wheel, waiting for new growth, cradling the children of the Goddess. Cold winds blow and I am reminded of how the cycles are healing to my spirit, there is a time for proliferation and explosive effort, yet this time is for introspection, holding those I love close, nourishing my inner self with silence, love and the warm touch of family.

After our arrival in New Mexico it was time to drive to Colorado for both community and family commitments. As we started our journey we were shrouded in both brilliant light and heavy snow reflecting the twinkling eyes of the Winter Queen. After just 30 minutes of driving the skies cleared. Some hours later in Durango we were greeted with blanketed peaks, standing a chilled silent vigil as if calling and at the same time challenging the return of the light.

This is the place where I have celebrated many a Yule, circling with a Dianic coven, always with the warm embrace of the Goddess. Celebrating with the Crow Women continues to be one of the great privileges of my life. This group is brimming with Crones, Maidens and Mothers resplendent in the glory of the feminine divine.

No matter the length of my absence, here I find a welcoming family, loving embraces and the knowledge that I belong to this extended community. While I have known men to proclaim that they feel awkward or unwelcome among Dianics this has never been my experience. These strong women love and embrace men as part of their extended community. Many of you may know the Crow Women from their Crow Goddess album. These incredible women practice much of their craft via music, a blessing to the entire community.

Finding words to express being a part of this community is difficult. There are not phrases eloquent enough or images colorful enough to illustrate the experiences’ of place, love and family that that well inside of me in the presence of these powerful women, each a loved sister in the story of my life. Crow Women have created a place for strong independent women to openly express themselves in love and trust and a place where the men who love them are cherished as expressions of the Divine.

Yule it’s self was a joyous experience. I was thrilled to be asked to take a part in the Yule play that was central to their Solstice rite. Sacred, irreverent and touching are probably the best words to describe this experience. As always, I was deeply honored to participate. Yet this is unlike the many circles I have participated in this year, here I am just one of a loving community, not a guest, not new, not unknown, I am a brother and I am Home!

Pagan Road Trip-Post One

Leaving Florida with its warm winds and sunny skies amounted to an epic journey into the rhythms of Gaia; with each passing mile the skies grew darker and the earth ever more brown and restful. Our drive across I-10 was a transition back to the seasons, a coming home of sorts that left me feeling invigorated about our planned yearlong adventure.

Arriving at our first destination in New Mexico just served to reinforce my growing sense that I was returning home to a place where the land, the people and the Goddess speak clearly and with out pretence. Prior to our arrival friends had agreed to let us park on their land while we drove, by car, to see my partners’ family over the holiday. This however is not just a place to park, but a place were loved friends have established a community that exemplifies sustainability, community and relationship with the Divine in all that they do.

While Sunflower River self identifies as a “sustainable spiritual community” it is so much more. Here is a place where the conversation surrounds mulching gardens, how many eggs the chickens lay, compost toilets, Pagan festivals and community. This is no hippie commune of bright-eyed optimists; here you will find University employees, a nurse and others coming together to live in a way that reflects their values. Each of these people is highly committed to what they are manifesting.

In this place Gaia is wrapped in a fabric woven of interconnected threads of intent. The love and honoring of Gaia is not something encountered at a morning blessing or festival, but something made manifest by dirt covered hands holding a shovel while standing in a freezing rain. The feeling that I was standing in a sacred space for the entire Pagan community was very strong. I was enveloped with gratitude and admiration for these individuals’ efforts to live with and in service to the Goddess.

Sunflower River is a community asset that encourages others to visit and become involved in volunteer projects on their farm. If you find your self in need of an even deeper connection to the Divine this would be a great place to visit and help work the soil that is the rich nourishing skin of the Goddess.

Leaving the Womb of Gaia

More than six years ago I set sail for the Virgin Islands in a 34-foot Sail boat named Bacchus. Obviously the choice of boat names reflected my intent to spend some time wallowing in wine, mirth, and adventure. As I set sail a new connection was born with the entire cross-cultural pantheon of water deities.

Palaemon, Lir, Yam, Poseidon, these and many more became central to my sense of sacred place. Once one lives on the water there is a special connection with movement, the tides, the moon and the wind that develops. Being gently rocked to sleep in the womb of Gaia leaves this sailor awash with images of history, adventure and great epics of antiquity.

After living on Bacchus I moved ashore in the Virgin Islands. Living on a small island also reinforced my connection to the sea. Everything from your sense of direction to food prices are influenced by her presence. Yes, I said her presence, for me the sea is a living deity, ever changing, ever cycling, mother to us all.

After a number of years I recently moved to Florida where I have been living on a 44-foot sailboat. As I sit here typing I am feeling the waves lapping at the boat and I am soothed. Living at sea may be the most sacred experience I have ever had.

I am going to miss her. As of tomorrow I will be moving on from water living and ashore onto an RV. Time for a new adventure, new connection with places, peoples and Gods. My love of the sea will always be with me. Yet I will miss her.

Walking the Talk, 10 Pagans Who Made A Difference in 2011

This is my highly subjective list of Pagans who “Walked the Talk” in 2011. As I write this I have a list of dozens names sitting next to me, what a great community. Most of the people on this list you will know, some maybe not. All have created a lasting impression on me during 2011. Being the list author this year I have used my discretion and, however tempting, not selected any of those named last year for this years list.

10. Michael York

Some of those with whom I interact in the Pagan community may not know who Michael York is. Over the past year this Pagan, from across the pond, has become very influential in my life and the broader Pagan community. Mr. York hosts a closed group on facebook titled “Pagans” When I was first accepted as part of the group I had reservations about the concept of a closed group. Over time it became apparent that Michael’s vision for the group was positive, productive and successful. You see Mr. York is a true theological academic and the Pagans group is no place for light hearted Pagan banter. The discussions among its members are focused, deliberate and meaningful. Mr. York has created a place for those who are serious about exploring Pagan theology, which benefits the entire community. I am deeply grateful for both being a member of this group and for all I have learned from the group members. His accomplishments in educating and influencing many well-known members make Michael York a Pagan who Walked his Talk in 2011.

9. Wendy Griffin

When Wendy Griffin accepted the post of Academic Dean at Cherry Hill Seminary the Pagan community had no idea how fortunate we were. Ms. Griffin’s background includes being the department Chair, Department of Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies, University of California, Long Beach. It is tempting to list her other accomplishments as part of this post, however it is her performance at Cherry Hill that gained her the respect of the Pagan community. Wendy is always available to community members, ready to support projects within the community and does not shy away from difficult issues. Her leadership skills and academic record have enhanced the reputation of Cherry Hill and made her an invaluable resource. From organizing panels at PantheaCon to leading the way in creating a credible Pagan educational institution Wendy has established that she is a Pagan who makes a difference while walking her talk.

8. Greg Harder

Greg exemplifies putting your belief into action. As the former Public Information Officer for Covenant of the Goddess he established that the way to create interest within the Pagan community in the digital age was by creating, managing and consistently contributing to public access facebook pages, something that he continues doing to this day. CoG’s page now has more than 4,200 followers. His additional activities managing the People of the Earth page have also been highly successful. Add to all this involvement with many other organizations including the Bay area Pagan Newswire Collective and you have intention in action. While Greg may seem quiet and unassuming I can assure you that he knows full well how to challenge what he has questions about in the community. Greg deserves the appreciation of the entire community for his own quiet way of walking the talk.

7. Crystal Blanton

During the last year Crystal has established herself as one of the new breed of Pagan leaders. Bringing her professional experience to the Pagan table and applying it with such compassion and pure selflessness is impressive to say the least. Her efforts in helping communities heal from past experiences have benefited the community as a whole. Add to all this her contributions to the Patheos Pagan Portal, multiple speaking events and her service to national Pagan Organizations and you have a Pagan who does far more than walk her talk

6. Galina Krasskova

Galina may be a Second Year Dean at The New Seminary for Interfaith Studies, but she is much more than that. She is a Heathen academic with a master’s degree in religious studies. More to the point her writings and engagement of the Pagan community have brought a new and deeper understanding of Heathenry among more traditional minded Pagan practitioners. Always open to questions and conversation, even from the unlearned, such as my self, she sets an example for what Pagan unity could be. Academic, teacher, presenter, writer, these are pursuits familiar to the Pagan community. It is her grace, dignity and compassion in these endeavors that make her a Pagan who walks her Talk.

5. Nels Linde

Going over a list of Pagan organizations that Nels is involved with is like reviewing a who’s who list of Pagan organizations. I admire him for his willingness to speak out and act when necessary. What put him on this list are his efforts as a member of the Pagan Newswire Collective. As a writer he is insightful, accurate and always interested in the human aspects of a story. Much has been made of the “new” Pagan media and all it represents in terms of the future of our community. If these predictions come true it will be because of Nels and his fellow PNC members. His consistent professional and articulate pursuit of high journalistic standards with a heart is amazing. For some walking your talk is a goal, for Nels it is seemingly second nature. Here is to you teacher, friend, activist, and writer Cheers! The world is better with you in it!

4. David Salisbury

It was difficult to find an individual photo of David for this post, as he is always involved with people, causes, protests, fundraising etc. David is another one of the “new” Pagan leaders whom I so much admire. Focused on service to communities of which he is part David never rests. Gay rights, Pagan rights, Animal rights, you name a progressive issue and David is involved. If the concept of service to community could have a middle name it would be David! His tireless efforts on behalf of community, humanity and the planet make David a Pagan leader we can all support. From his first breath in the morning to his last at night David seems to very much walk his talk.

3. Anne Newkirk Niven

This longtime Editor of Sage Woman magazine had a particularly challenging year in 2011. After the largest distributer of Sage Woman went bankrupt Ann found the courage to ask the Pagan community to come to the aid of Sage Woman and Witches & Pagans. Oh, did I mention that the community responded gladly. That response is a testament to the value of this publication to Pagan women. This would be of little note if Ann were the kind of editor who published only fluff pieces that pandered to the lowest common denominator. As we all know, she is not. Her editorial this year urging the community to embrace ex offenders was controversial and well thought out. The world could use more leaders who are willing to take on the hard issues and not shy away from dissent. For her courage in confronting adversity, in both editorial policy and business, Ann deserves our respect as a Pagan woman who walks her talk.

2. Ms. Rabbit Matthews

Few individuals in the Pagan community have put so much effort into building a community only to see it thrust into the middle of a drama filled controversy. What is so remarkable About Ms Rabbit is the emotional authenticity with which she dealt with the assault on her organization. With openness, honesty, courage and heartfelt concern for others she worked on healing the community rather than seeking to protect what she had manifested. Today CAYA is a leader in inclusiveness. While we should all admire her response to this issue, we can learn much from her in terms of applying the Pagan ethic of Love and Trust to even the most divisive of issues. Ms Rabbit is truly a Pagan who walks her talk!

1. T. Thorn Coyle

There is so much to admire in the work of T. Thorn Coyle. Over the course of this year she has been involved in multiple fundraising efforts for worthy causes. It is however her accomplishments in another arena that put her at the top of this list. Her daily posts have become a kind of daily spiritual nourishment to thousands of Pagans. Never trite, always insightful, these posts offer spiritual solace in a world gone mad. She is a teacher, author, Occupy activist, fundraiser, friend in the craft and more! She also has taken it to another level, through the internet she has managed to create a sense of personal relationship, intimacy even, with those that follow her posts. Mentor to thousands would not be an exaggeration. Thank You T Thorn Coyle for helping us all Walk the Talk!

On another subject let me take a moment to thank all the spouses, partners, roommates and business associates of these Pagans who make a difference, your sacrifice helps make them who they are.

Pagan Road Trip – 365 Days Riding With A Goddess

Over the last year as First Officer for Covenant of the Goddess I learned much, became aware of many issues within the Pagan community and made many new friends. This experience has led me to a desire to get to know the wider Pagan community better. With this in mind it is my plan to travel the nation in 2012 and meet as many members of the community as I can. As I do this I have some specific goals in mind.

As First Officer Emeritus of CoG, it is my intent to gather the views of as many CoG members as possible and share them with the National Board. I have learned is there is a large body of the membership that does not attend Grand Council and I would be pleased to serve as a conduit for their voices.

As National President for Officers of Avalon it is my intent to spread the message far and wide that Pagan First Responders are there for the community. Specifically, the subject of establishing Standard Operating Procedures for First Responders in service at Pagan events interests me. It is my hope to host discussions on this issue.

Currently I am in the process of developing presentations on a number of other Pagan subjects to include:

Transformative Pagan Leadership

Pagans and Disaster Response, a new model.

Pagan fund raising and social networks

Honoring our Elders while leaving the drama behind.

Tentatively the plan is to offer my services as a panel facilitator on these subjects and also individual presentations. My interest ranges from small group discussions to large festival presentations. Obviously I will be seeking established voices in the community to join me in these efforts.

Logistics,

An undertaking such as this takes considerable time and expense. Over the last few months I have transitioned from homeowner in the Virgin Islands to RV owner on a shoestring budget. Along the way I intend to teach some CPR classes, help my partner vend her hand made jewelry and generally do odd jobs. So if you need cheep labor feel free to let me know. (Labor that gets my hands in the dirt is preferred)

As I spend this year in Service to the Goddess it is my hope to in some small way make a difference in our community, our country, our world. Please Join me and speak up, reach out, and participate in the evolution of our community.

Occupy And The Tapestry of Social Justice.

Across America minority communities witness the Occupy movement's expressions that the political system is fundamentally flawed. While the Occupy protesters may seem few, on a national scale they are having a profound effect; creating the perception that the political system is beyond repair. While not protesting, millions of Americans have expressed their agreement with the goals and positions of this movement.

What does all this mean for the political landscape in this nation? First, participation in the political system is beginning to be seen as a statement of support for the corporate controlled political parties. Second, examination of this shift in opinion reveals a possible profound effect on voter turnout in the upcoming elections. Finally, for the first time since the 1960’s minority voices have the ability change the direction the country is headed.

With the marriage of corporate and political abuse becoming part of the internal belief system of Americans we will see increased attempts to act outside of the established systems of change. No longer will citizens believe that they can contact their “representatives” with issues, complaints, petitions etc. and expect any reaction other than a defense of the corporate controlled system. This shift in belief may well lead to more protests and civil disobedience and the development of new alliances among America's minority voices.

Even more profound may be the effects on established voting trends. While many of the Occupy protesters, such as myself, profess intent to vote in upcoming elections the simple fact is our message is having a ardent effect on the American psyche. If the system is irreparably broken what motivation is there for those who even nominally support Occupy to vote? This issue goes to something deeper than individuals expressed support for the voting system. If, as a group, Americans feel distrustful of the system there will be a major impact on voter turnout, likely effecting election results.

Finally, the resurgence of the belief that protesting and bringing forward minority opinion can affect the national debate will construct a new political landscape where alliances between minority groups are forged. 2012 may be the year when those seeking religious, cultural, sexual and gender-based equality unite with those seeking economic justice in the realization that these goals are all woven into a tapestry called Social Justice.

As an individual, I support both the Occupy movement and the belief that voter participation is important. Holding these two seemingly in conflict beliefs is challenging. The temptation is strong to engage in dialectical thinking and align with one or the other. To make that choice however would make me part of the problem. It is this kind of right vs. wrong, left vs. right, capitalist vs. socialist thinking that has brought this country to the brink of social turmoil. We need enter into an era of honest dialog with other citizens and leave the old “us vs.them paradigm” on the ash heap of failed political systems.

Open Letter to the President

Dear Mr. President,

What happened to you? Today this country sits on the precipice of great change. Citizens are protesting. Legislation is pending that holds the potential to strip Americans of their rights and you remain silent.

Tens of thousands of Americans are engaging in protest around this country and there is no response from the White House. Local governments are using nuisance laws to suppress First Amendment rights. From the women’s suffrage movement to the civil rights protests there is a long history of those who oppose freedom using such laws to suppress free speech. So where is the community organizer, who fought for the rights of individuals, that we elected?

What happened to you Mr. President?

Our Congress is considering laws that will give sweeping powers to the military. This legislation, as written, will not prohibit these powers from being used internally against Americans. The military establishment says that this is not the intent of the legislation, yet we all remember Janet Reno telling Americans that forfeiture laws were only for “drug lords” like “Ortega”. Today these laws are used to confiscate the possessions of those convicted of even minor drug offenses. Government will abuse its’ authority if given the opportunity. Where is the great orator we elected who spoke to the nation about individual liberty?

What happened to you Mr. President?

There is also pending legislation that would empower the government to exert control over the Internet. These powers could eventually include censorship of internet content and the ability to “shut down” parts of this bastion of free speech. Where is the candidate who engaged with Americans and promoted freedom of expression? Again I ask,

What happened to you Mr. President?

The hard won rights of women are under assault by extremists who wish to return to a time when men mandated the actions of women. Yet when these draconian proposals are made there is a deafening silence from the administration. Where is the individual who eloquently established his support for the rights of women, people of color and members of the LGBT community as he campaigned around the country?

What did happen to you Mr. President?

Are you so encased in the world of lobbyists, political pendants and pollsters that you have lost the very humanity that served you so well in the past? I urge you come out of the White House, speak to protesters, publicly address legislation that threatens the rights of Americans, support those under attack from the majority and most of all return to being the man we all so respected for his incredible ability to articulate the dreams and aspirations of average Americans.

What would our country be like if the First Amendment read:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, except by large groups, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, except in cases of public sanitation, unauthorized camping or use of public parks, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances so long as these petitions come from lobbyists and not street gatherings.

Today we find ourselves at a crossroads of history; will governments around the country be allowed to diminish the Occupy Movement with the enforcement of health codes and park maintenance issues? Will the assault on the First Amendment set precedence for other changes in interpretation? Maybe, next we will witness changes in the first sentence of the amendment. It could read something like this:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, except where the religion is practiced on public lands.”

Images from across this country seem strangely familiar, harkening back to a time when Americans last took to the streets nationally. Sadly, these images also reflect the same response from authorities.

So which image is 1970 and which is 2011?

So why should the modern Pagan community take a stand in support of the protesters rights? Is it because we are unanimous in support of their cause? Not likely in our wildly diverse community. Yet we have an interest in standing in support of the Bill of Rights. If governments and corporations are allowed to subvert the rights of the people when they disagree with the message, we as Pagans can look forward to similar treatment in the future.

Whether you agree with the protesters or not, whether you are Republican, Democrat, Green or Libertarian what is unfolding on our streets is an assault on our rights and we need to take a stand. Write articles, call Congress, join the movement or call your mayor. Protest the evolution of restrictions on our right to protest.

Wounded by the sheer volume of human suffering my heart has yet to recover from the sights and sounds of Haiti after the quake. Over the past many months I have been involved with an organization known as 100% for Haiti. Yes, there is an organization that spends all of its funds assisting the children of Haiti. No this organization has no paid staff outside of Haiti, why would we? Haiti is where our efforts are focused.

With the major NGO’s still hoarding in reserve tens of millions given to help the people of Haiti it is the small community based organizations that are making a difference today.

In the small village of Morne Tapion the events of January 12, 2010 were devastating. Suddenly a community already on the brink of a disaster driven by hunger, lack of medical care and poor sanitation was striped of its only community asset, their school, now a pile of rubble.

Out of the rubble has risen a Phoenix of compassion and hard work. Artists in Saint Croix U.S. Virgin Islands banded together and held an action to benefit the community and 100% for Haiti was born. Over the last 20 months much has improved. We have constructed a school of ply wood, purchased tables, hired teachers, built facilities, provided meals to the children and even have began to insure the kids get some medical attention. All accomplished with a pluralistic humanitarian intent.

Last year we had 170 children in our school. Today there are more than 310 students. Hope is returning to Morne Tapion, children smile and mothers can envision their children having a better life.

Big events have hit this community, a plywood school, the communities first flush toilet, some nutrition assistance, minimal medical care. These are the building blocks of a healthy community.

Some may wonder how all this has been accomplished? Do we have unlimited funds like the big NGO’s? No in fact 100% for Haiti struggles along on a budget of $1,000.00 per month. Yet, today the world has turned its eyes from Haiti, appeals for funds go unanswered while millions of dollars sit unused in the accounts of Major NGO’s. With an additional 140 students in our school this year we are stretched beyond our capabilities.

Members of the Pagan community have proved they are generous when called upon to make a difference.

Today I am placing the call. Can you please support this worthy effort? We are not seeking large sums of money. It is in fact our small size that makes us so effective. We have no fancy fundraising materials, no adopt-a-child program, no tear jerking commercials, only real people making a difference with what little we have. Guest Post - Some thoughts on healing our sexist culture at home

Today while doing a bit of research I was disturbed to be reminded of the pervasive sexism embedded in Wicca. Dividing the world into masculine and feminine, whether personality traits or the elements air (masculine) and water (feminine), does a disservice to both genders and to our world. Why should air or water have a gender? Why should the act of leadership which corresponds to air be masculine, are our women not leaders. Many in justifying this archaic gender role division might say that we all have both masculine and feminine and we must learn to integrate both. But I say that assigning the masculine with leadership or strength gives men and women the idea that it is natural in men and must learned to be embraced by women. These divisions are culturally taught gender roles not more innate to one sex over the other. Multiple studies have shown that equal numbers of 7 year old girls and boys want to be president but by middle school females have given up on this idea, possibly because girls are shown through our culture that they have a snowballs chance in hades.

Let us as Pagans lead the cultural revolution in transforming our sexist culture. Let’s empower our budding goddesses by doing away with gender stereotypes in our correspondences, ritual and magic and give all powers and all elements to all humans equally. We need both men and women and every other sex to stand together with all of the traits that make us human if we are to heal this world, our connection to nature and to each other. Honor the Goddess and give her back her power!

Wall Street- Demands Clear

The establishment response to the Occupy Wall Street protests is disingenuous and dishonorable in the extreme. This strategy which ignores the aspirations of the American people in order to maintain the corporate grip on power is amoral. The 1% know very well what is being demanded, attempts to muddy the waters with a “lack of understanding” or name calling "dirty Hippie" are only desperate attempts to discredit the protesters.

Stated simply WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK!

We seek to, for example

Insure that hundreds of thousands of hard working Americans who cannot afford a doctor when they are sick receive medical treatment.

Discredit the government lie that jobs are being created. Replacing good jobs with low wage jobs that have no benefits is not job growth. These “new jobs” constitute a life sentence of impoverishment.

Hold accountable bankers and speculators who crashed our economy by duping honest Americans into home loans they could ill afford, selling the loans at huge profits, and leaving our citizens to pay the price.

Live in a country where corporations are not considered people. People are people, with human rights that trump the rights of corporations.

Grant nonprofit and humanitarian organizations more access to the halls of power in Washington than corporations.

End corporate domination of the political process by limiting or denying them the ability to purchase politicians, governments, or political parties.

Live in a country where corporations are required to consider the public interest prior to moving jobs overseas.

Establish that the rich have a moral and legal obligation to pay an equal percentage of their income in taxes as the middle class.

Re establish that honesty, hard work and compassion are central to the American dream, not greed, self interest and power over others.

You know what we want; playing stupid will not save you from the changes that will flow from these protests.

We will not desist until you return our country to its citizens.

My First Wand, Gifted By A Child

Over the years my practice as a Witch has relied heavly on tools, some traditional like the Chalice, the Athame and the Pentacle, others from my background with native traditions. Strangely, I have never incorporated the Wand as a standard item in my personal ritual process. This is extremely unusual considering the strong influences of the element of Fire on my life. With wands being so associated with Fire one would logically make the assumption that I would have long ago developed an affinity for this magikal tool.

More than a year ago I was visiting my brother and was introduced to a 11 year old in-law of his. During the ensuing adult conversation this young man became aware that I was a Witch. More than a year later upon my return to my brother’s home I was presented with a hand made wand manifested by the hands of this young child. Stunned, honored and overwhelmed with the power of the moment is the best way to describe my reaction. As I held tears back it occurred to me how Magikal moments flow into my life. While I have done many spells, rituals and am well practiced in focusing my intent, it is these moments when Magik “happens to me” that I find most profound.

In this Wand I perceive strong energies of trust, protection, growth and generosity. At least for me, there could be no more powerful magikal tool than one crafted for hours by a child with the intent of making it a gift to someone they barely know. Each time I touch this Wand I am reminded of the power of generosity and the interconnectedness of all humanity.

Touched by the presence of like manifestations of the Goddess, I am humbled by the meaning and power of community. As a solitary this might be surprising, yet after five years living on a small island without community I find myself wallowing in the ability to look into my sisters and brothers eyes and see reflected back to me the love of the Goddess.

Just to sit and observe the community is a privilege, to see the incredible close connections expressed in warm hugs that linger in familiarity long after the greetings are complete. While not yet known to this community I perceive the bonds of faith that bind these magikal people together.

For too many years I was absent from consistent access to this kind of Pagan community, the occasional visit does not compare with the quiet contemplation of belonging to such a community.

Fort Myers Pagan Pride, Thank You, your welcome was warm, your power intense and I am humbled by all you have achieved as a community.

The Department of Paranoia - 911 Remembered

As a firefighter the anniversary of the attacks on our country hold special meaning for me. On this day my brother and sister Firefighters exemplified the ethic that all Firefighters hold dear. Lives were lost, lives were saved and in the end American heroes were entombed within the wreckage. My heart aches for these like spirits, their families and all Americans who lost loved ones on this infamous day.

Yes, heroes with a small h, these men and woman were doing what Firefighters across this country do every day, risking their lives in providing service to the community. If they were able to speak, I know they would not respond to the title Hero, only smile and express their appreciation at having the opportunity to be a Firefighter in service to their community.

I have spent much time contemplating their sacrifice and am greatly concerned that the memory of their honorable actions is being distorted to support an American obsession with security that leans toward paranoia. In our desperate attempt to insure that such an event never happens again our nation has created a security infrastructure that transcends even the internal security efforts of totalitarian countries. As the Department of Homeland Security (Department of Paranoia), continues to frighten Americans each year on this date we sink deeper and deeper into an abyss of fear driven restrictions on civil rights.

These brave men and women died in service to the “Land of the Free” It is my hope that should I be called as a Firefighter to make a similar sacrifice there will be a “Land of the Free” left to make that sacrifice for.

My Own Pagan Seasons

Many of us in the Pagan community seek our relationship with the Divine through a connection with the seasons. Living on Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands this process takes on a unique manifestation. Close to the equator, the generally recognized seasons that mark the turning to the wheel are in many ways absent and as a Witch I needed to develop a calendar to honor all the divine manifestations of the Goddess in this place. As I move on from Saint Croix I have spent many hours contemplating how I have connected with the Divine while calling this place home.

The seasons.

As November creeps to a close each year the “Christmas winds” commence, blowing strong and from the east they harold a time of sailors delight, the coming together of family and preparation for the coming to the tourists who provide the economic activity that drives the island.

As December passes the “dry” season begins on Saint Croix. This is a time of planting for farmers and gardeners. Thoughts of the plantation history of the island always enter my mind. Included in these remembrances are the recognition of the sacrifices and misery caused by slavery on this island. Indeed, I have a special connection to this past as a person of Danish decent. Denmark held these islands in servitude for many years. As the season progresses smoke from brush fires can often be seen in the distance.

As May gives way to June the Hurricane season begins in Saint Croix, but even more significant is the beginning of the “turtle season” Green, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles come ashore to nest. This is a magical time when the timelessness of the island is front and center. Some months later as the possibility of storms increase these turtles hatch in the dark of night in what my partner has termed a “tumble of turtles” This is the most magical of seasons when the power of Gaia is manifest via storms and the cycle of rebirth and renewal represented by the turtles.

As October wanes residents of the island begin to breath a sigh of relief as they give thanks for surviving another hurricane season. This is a time of quite reflection, the storms have gone, the tourists have vanished and the island takes stock in another successful year.

Yes I will miss the seasons of this place; I have become connected to the Goddess through the rhythms of the island. It is time to move on, yet I will always treasure the opportunity I had here to recognize new and different seasons, develop a system for honoring Gaia as the wheel turned and becoming grounded in Saint Croix.

A Little Known Great Pagan Leader

Recently it was my privilege to visit with the Distinguished Faith Group Leader of the Fort Hood Texas Open Circle Michele Waldon. As High Priestess of this group Michele is the leader of the largest and oldest military Open Circle anywhere in the Nation. Most remarkable in this meeting was this individuals seeming lack of insight into how extraordinary her efforts are.

This Open Circle endured an assault by Rep. Barr many years ago and has since always been in a high profile position being on the largest military base in the country. Military regulations require that the circle accept all comers, which leaves Ms. Walden to operate as high Priestess for individuals of many paths. I cannot imagine the effort it takes to create and lead a local circle in such circumstances. Add to this the fact that they are operating within a military culture that values conformity highly and you have quite a challenge.

My hat is off to Michele Waldon, a great Pagan Leader providing service to both Pagans and her country at Fort Hood Texas.

A call to Action for the Clergy

Dear fellow Clergy,

It is clear that fundamentalist clergy are hostile to human liberty. Today we have the very real threat of the “Christian” dominionists who seek to cement their religious values into federal statute.

It is the separation of church and state that tends to preclude an American propensity toward fanaticism. Should this 'wall' be allowed to tumble the consequences for our society will be catastrophic. If we allow religion to be enshrined in law, fanatics to sip at the cup of power, the progress of generations will come to naught.

It matters not your religious proclivities, Christian, Jew, Islamist, Pagan, Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist, all must now stand together and face this new ‘National Security’ threat, one that seeks to etch the cancer of religious bigotry in our legal code. If we allow the marriage of faith and authority, we bind our children to be combatants in the fight to resist the tyranny that will surely be born of the union.

This is not a conservative agenda as Berry Goldwater observed decades ago,

“And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of conservatism."

Dominionists seek to enslave the entire nation to their religious values for their own good. This brings to mind another often quoted passage used in support of conservative principles:

“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” “Clive Staples”

The first targets of these groups are those most vulnerable due to their status on the fringes of society. However, if we neglect to stand for the rights of the most maligned in our society, it is our own rights that will be eroded before we take the opportunity to act in their defense.

It is time for ministers of all faiths and political persuasions to take a stand, say something, be counted, or risk leading our congregations and all that we hold sacred quietly into the night.

In A Surprise Move Governor Walker-R Resigns in Wisconsin

In a surprise move Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker admitted today the he led an effort to count the votes of thousands of deceased Republicans in the recent recall election. The Governor then abruptly resigned after explaining that he could not find a single political figure he could trust to assume the duties of Governor upon his departure.

After being pressed to name a successor (allowed under Wisconsin law) the soon to be former Governor named Selena Fox of Circle Sanctuary as the new Governor. The Governor explained that the well-known Witch might be the only person in the state with the power to heal and lead the state.

When this reporter attempted to contact the new Governor he was referred to the new Press Secretary Jason Pitz;-Waters. The new Press secretary released a list of nominations for Cabinet positions that include.

Transformative Pagan Leadership Revisited

There are many models of leadership, yet the ability to effectively create, communicate and develop consensus for change within Pagan organizations depends on three transformative principles.

First, the ability to influence. Influence as referenced here is not the old paradigm of “Power Over”. This form of influence comes from the power to inspire and motivate an organization towards goals of mutual value. This principle is expressed through the ability to build consensus with respectful, meaningful, honest communication and the ability to articulate a path of action.

Next, Achievement. This principle is manifested directly from the ability of the leader to demonstrate a powerful vision and focus. Transformative leaders demonstrate this principle by taking on goals perceived as not achievable and defying expectations. Based on having achieved “the remarkable” these individuals then move the community forward in support of other more complex organizational priorities.

Finally, Authenticity, is expressed through a leaders spiritual, physical and emotional presence in purposeful, ethical pursuit of organizational objectives. Authentic leaders are willing to look at themselves, determine their abilities/weaknesses and empower others to achieve goals with their unique skills also.

Influence, Achievement and Authenticity, three principles that define effective leaders. They are also principles that are easy to put into action in the community. None of these are unfamiliar concepts. While we may give them different names; It could be said they are central to many of the paths we follow. The key is to apply them when in leadership situations in Pagan organizations. To often individuals become involved in the day-to-day workings of organizations and forget to apply what they know spiritually to the mundane world.

Focus on these principles and your success in leadership will be greatly enhanced.

Religious Freedom? Now or Never

Standing Down with the Goddess

Engaged in the struggle for Pagan rights I often find myself fully, even adamantly responding to those who would deny these rights. While my passion for the subject is undeniable, it is also something that can affect both results and my attitude as a human being.

Recently an internal voice whispered to me “If you want to ‘stand up’ for Pagan rights you need to ‘stand down’ and listen”. My first reaction was that this insight was about listening to those with whom I disagree, truly a noble and effective path to follow. Yet this idea of stand down kept surfacing in my thoughts until I looked at it another way.

Stand down and listen means quiet my self, listen to the divine, in nature, in others and in myself. For me this means putting my hands in the dirt, swimming in the ocean, listening to my loved ones or literally hugging a tree. When I do these things my heart rate drops, my mind calms and I can see the Magik in the world. In fact, I am suddenly even able to see the divine in those who oppose Pagan rights.

The Goddess is in you, me and all around us. Consider ‘standing down’ when you are focused on something. If you are at all like me it will bring clarity and a connection to the divine.

Pagan Leadership, The Transformative Model

With the rapid rate of growth in the broader Pagan community change is inevitable. This requires a new model of Pagan leadership. That being said, what qualities will these transformative leaders possess? It seems it becomes necessary to define the qualities of a transformative Pagan leader and establish the dynamic of organizational change a leader must manage, in terms of Pagan culture, structure and the community of individuals that make up an organization.

Today’s Pagan organizations need leaders who are transformative in assisting organizations to develop new goals, establish support and actionable by-in from community members. These leaders will need to possess the ability to take established organizations and manifest something new and positive. Transformative leaders, by their example, rather than authority, bring about change in organizations basic cultural and political systems.

All to often-Pagan organizations seek out leaders who are focused on maintaining the status quo. These leaders engage in perpetuation of the current leadership dynamic and power structure. Nor are they focused on the need for their organization to grow and evolve in order to be meaningful to successive generations of Pagans.

Generally, transformative leaders are selected when there is a triggering event in an organization. Examples of this could be a decline in membership, funds or general support for the organization.

Changes modeled by these leaders tend to encounter three types of reactions. First, change tends to create energy to overcome inertia. Second, strong negative feelings and resistance from members are inevitable. Finally, the feeling that acknowledging the need for changes is an indictment of past leadership.

Transformative leaders tend to revitalize organizations by creating a new vision, institutionalizing that vision by modeling direct action and manifesting a new organizational culture that is not change phobic.

This is accomplished by creating a process where:

Past organizational accomplishments and leadership are acknowledged and put into historical context.

Unique approaches are modeled as a possible antidote for the triggering event that brought the transformative leader to the forefront.

Collaboratively establishing a new set of values that brings a refreshed sense of worth to the organization.

These actions lead to a stage of “growth” where community members look at new ways to interact, see the past as an opportunity to learn rather than a place to dwell and become excited about new possibilities and community actions.

An additional obstacle to the transformative approach is a concept in organizational leadership known as “Founders Syndrome” Generally our founders were transformative in approach, But in “Founders Syndrome” these very leaders lack the foresight to establish a plan for organizational success beyond their time as a transformative leader.

Organizations are left to wallow in past accomplishments with no clear plan for the future. Founders are venerated and their approaches manifested into a future where their examples may be of little use due to changing organizational dynamics, technology or community needs.

Transformative leaders generally consider their tenures as temporary, manifesting a positive change in direction and developing a succession plan that recognizes that the qualities of a transformative leader may not be suited to the long-term administration of an organization.

So how do we find these transformative leaders? Lets start with the qualities they possess.

They believe strongly that change begins with personal example.

They seek to include all community members in a collaborative process.

They are focused on the future.

They have organizational, logistical, and public speaking skills.

They are publicly Pagan.

They are risk takers.

They believe in the ability of the community to come together.

They are not necessarily religious leaders.

They are often (but not always) in a middle generation, not yet Elders but well established in their communities, able to communicate between generations.

Pagan Organizations who are seeing a lack of growth or motivation in their membership can benefit from transformative leadership. Is it hard to acknowledge the need for change? Yes, but it would be even harder to witness the slow decline of great Pagan organizations that have been the life’s work of so many in our community.

Time to Point the Finger

Over the past few years we have witnessed dozens of examples in the mainstream media of attempts to brand our community as the “other” different and apart from society. Generally these issues arise when an individual who has some form of a Pagan or Wiccan connection is arrested for some misdeed. Many writers in our community rightfully point out that the so called ‘Pagan connection” is tenuous at best and is an attempt to brand an entire community with the deeds of a single individual.

Fast-forward to today, Pagans are posting and reposting links that identify Anders Breivik, the suspect in the Norway attacks as a right wing fundamentalist Christian extremist. After scanning dozens of news stories about this individual I can find no "Christian" link. No mention of a church, religious group etc.

Are we not engaging in the same form of behavior that has been used to brand our community for so long? Do we as a community really need to engage in the kind of behavior that we so abhor?

Yes this individual’s act is below contempt. Yes it is fair to point out his extremist right-wing political leanings. After all, extremists of any persuasion are threats to us all. Yet, to brand him as a Christian is unfair to the millions of peace loving people around the world who follow the Christian faith.

Is this an opportunity to look at our community? Food for Thought

An Indictment of my Pagan Elders

Over the last year or so I have been very busy working on Pagan Unity. Beginning this task I was told by many effective Pagan activists involved in Interfaith that Pagan “Intrafaith” was very difficult. These Elders were more than correct.

In many conversations I have been told by Elders of our community to be cautious of that “other” Pagan Leader, Tradition, Path, effort because of events that have transpired in the past. Most of these leaders have agreed that Pagan unity is a worthwhile goal while continuing to berate others in a historical review of the formation of the Pagan community.

When confronted with this behavior I have often been schooled that history is important, as if I were a small child that has never learned that “those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.” Yet the version of history that these leaders are promoting with their rancor is not healthy. If we were to apply this theory of history to world events all Germans would still be considered Nazis, southerners would still be considered racists and the idea of interfaith cooperation would have no support.

Now, I know that these Elders deserve great respect for all they have accomplished. We as a community honor Mother, Maiden and Crone, as it should be. I am unable, however, to stand idly by while the incredible vibrant and idealistic energy of our Maidens is eroded and poisoned by events long past. It is time for our Elders to recognize that the tumultuous years of our communities’ formation created a poison arrow that needs to be sheathed permanently.

Now is the time for organizations to work together, let go of the past and bring forward what is positive, healthy and productive. Long held grudges have no place in the energy that our new communities of Pagan leaders are embodying. It is compassion, understanding, service and celebration of all we have in common that are the hallmarks of our community.

For a community that is consistently branded by society as “the other” it is unconscionable how much energy is wasted in attempts to brand individuals and paths inside our community in this same way. Some even wrap their grudges in the language of the intellectual or wise leader. These approaches are also transparent as at their heart also lay a lack of compassion and understanding.

Elders please understand that when you bring up these issues many of us tune out and begin to give less credence to your words. We do not want to believe that we will one day arrive at a place were we also are encumbered with grudges, petty complaints and the inability to move beyond the past conflicts in our community. Consider compassion for those who have wronged you, insight into these individuals more current achievements and the good of the entire community before you pass this poison to another generation.

A Birthday for all Pagans to Celebrate

Generally birthdays come and go, as we age the importance of these events diminish. Today, however, our community has the opportunity to celebrate the 16th birthday of a very well mannered young Wiccan. So why should you care? Is he exceptional in maturity, intelligence, insight or character? Yes I believe he is. Yet these things are not the reasons we should celebrate with this this young man.

Recently, I was visiting his parents on a short stop over in Florida and had the chance to visit with young Morgan Owens. While I was having the unusual experience of a very intelligent and mature discussion ( with a 15 year old) it came up that Morgan has lived his whole life openly as a Wiccan; interesting I thought, openly sharing who he is with all those who care to inquire.

I did not know how wrong my assumption was as Morgan produced a high school yearbook with an entire article devoted to him and his Wiccan faith. Immediately my thoughts turned to some very liberal private high school. Wrong again! Morgan attends a public high school in south Florida.

Stunned does not begin to describe the look on my face as this fact sank in. High School, you know, that place where cruelty is inflicted on those who dare to be different, openly accepting this teen, proclaiming even celebrating his alternative beliefs in an official year book! There is so much left to accomplish in our pursuit of Pagan rights, yet, in front of me was standing a shinning example of how far we have come.

While I am sure that Morgan’s unusual level of maturity has influenced the situation, it remains that this is an outstanding example of the tolerance, compassion and interfaith understanding that humanity can achieve. Frankly I was hit by the insight that if these young people, in high school, can do this so can humanity as a whole.

Morgan, in each generation there is a first, first to integrate a school, first woman elected etc. As far as I can tell, you also are a first, a privileged position that you seem to well deserve. It is my hope that the entire Pagan community will join me in wishing you a Happy 16th Birthday!

Use your instincts to protect others, be strong yet compassionate, avoid violence, act instead with strength of character.

There are those who cling to the rules.

Life requires that we all follow some blueprint for acceptable behavior.

At times you will be confronted with the choice of following the rules or doing what is right, blindly following rules can lead to a hardening of the heart. Do what is right and be willing to pay the price for your action. It is better to be able to sleep at night with an untarnished soul.

There are those who will judge your mistakes.

Acknowledge when you have made a mistake, take responsibility for your actions, and be willing to pay the penalty. Yet, once done with the process allow no one to bind you or your reputation to the past. Let go, act boldly in building a better life and worldview.

There are those who will seek to control what you believe.

When seeking your truth pay more attention to those asking questions than those providing answers. Your beliefs belong to you alone.

There are those who will point out the differences in people.

Focus on what all people have in common, this leads to compassion. Attempts to establish people as different or the “other” lead to fear prejudice and hate.

There are those who will insinuate that money and power are the measures of success.

Kind words, warm hearts, good friends, compassion, truthfulness and a loving family are the real measures of success.

As a Pagan I am often aware of deeper meanings and consequences then those around me. Recently this was driven home by an invitation to a thank you dinner given by the Santa Clara Pueblo for fire fighters at the Los Conches fire in New Mexico. Deep inside I knew there is great tragedy attached to the fire and that the idea of a hearty round of congratulations for all was deeply unsettling to me.

Over the course of the fire there were 60 homes burned, thousands of acres of sacred land scorched and an unknown number of places burned over that provided solace to those in need of peace and quiet. Recently I have become aware that a member of our community lost their family cabin.

That cabin has become representative to me of the real cost of the fire. I wonder what magic joyful memories the cabin held for this family. Today there are many who will never see again their teddy bear, photo of grandma, place of birth, etc. For more than a thousand years members of the pueblo community have come to this scorched land to pray and connect with their creator and ancestors.

It has always been my intent to be of service in these situations. Over the years the many thank you signs and cards my fire team has received have always had a disquieting affect on me. Mostly I feel that they proclaim a success that did not happen. Each time, while a community celebrates its delivery from the firestorm, I think to the traumatic losses suffered by those who have paid the price for mans attempt to control and shape the natural world.

Consistently I am humbled by these individuals who smile at their friends and join in their celebrations while quietly enduring the loss of all that they have. If we really want to find those to poor our adoration on maybe we should recognize these victims of the fire who show such courage and strength of character.

Mostly, I want to share that by the time an incident management team is dispatched there is no possibility of success; only the hope of mitigating further disaster. While I love what I do, it is always with the knowledge of what the event is doing to others that I go forward and give my very best, knowing that the effort will never be enough.

Being someone who holds all life and indeed all places sacred gives me a different prospective than many. Yes, I take comfort in the smiling faces of those whose homes were saved, yet I would give anything to erase the pain I see on the faces of those who have lost all they have ever known. It is that desire to prevent just one personal tragedy that has the most profound effect on me.

Terrible Beauty

Through eyes filled with sleep I glance up and see the massive column of smoke continuing to boil off the mountain. After more than a week of 16-hour days my body speaks to me via aches and pains. “Slow down, you can only take so much” Yet I know that homes, sacred sites, and possibly lives are at stake.

As the fire continues to consume acres we make plans to contain the monster, deprive it of its food by removing the fuel in its path. Each of us praying for the coming monsoon rains to begin soon. When engaged in resisting a force of nature it is clear that our efforts face only possible success.

Sleep comes again, sequestered in my hot tent, the smell of smoke my only constant companion I dream of the flames and their terrible beauty.

Divine Manifestation Shared

Leaving PSG this year there was much discussion of the transition back to the “real” world. After an entire week of open hearts, open communication, ritual experience and embracing the divine we return to our daily lives. In this discourse there is also a myth ingrained in our community that it is within tribe that we find our fullest spiritual insight and expression.

As we packed our gear many also seemed to be metaphorically packing away the experiences of the entire week. This process denies a principle that is central to my belief system; the divine is present in everything, including our daily lives. If we compartmentalize our wonderful Pagan experiences how do we hope to set the example that life is a manifestation of the Goddess, that all peoples are deserving of the same openness and trusting communication practiced at Pagan events.

Today I return to work, it is my intention to bring the lessons reinforced at PSG and speak to all with a sense of compassion, love and understanding. If I were to pack these things away with my gear they would add up to little more than a self centered indulgence, a setting apart of my self and our community as ”the other” manifesting only a brief flash of what humanity is capable of if people of all faiths recognize the divine within.

Libations, Conversation, Politics and Inevitable Controversy

PSG 2011 has been a great success despite rain and cool temperatures. Rituals have had great meaning, evoking tears from some, conversations abound that warm the heart and Pagan organizations have taken the opportunity to engage in networking that will surly benefit the entire Pagan community.

With a plethora of opportunities to attend workshops, rituals, and discussions there is much to choose from. Leaders from Circle Sanctuary, Witch School, Firefly House, Pagan Educational Network, Lady Liberty League, Covenant of the Goddess and many other organizations have participated in discussions about the growing trend toward Pagan Unity that seems to be sweeping the community. With many other subjects also being discussed PSG seems to be a great venue for discussing the future of Paganism. Here Pagans feel at home, safe and able to express themselves in perfect love and perfect trust.

Wednesday night it was my privilege to attend a 6 course Symposia dinner hosted by Cara Schultz of PNC Minnesota. All who attended enjoyed libations, hilarity and great food. Guests included Kathryn Hinds, Nels Linde, Judy Olson, Star Foster, Patrick McCollum, Selena Fox, others and myself. It was especially refreshing to spend some down time with this group of hard working people and get to know the real people behind the public personas.

With all this great progress it is unfortunate that some issues do arise at community events that confound expectations. When these things happen it is important to view those involved with compassion and understanding. It is my hope that the community will find in its heart to gain insight into Jason’s actions at PSG prior to jumping to conclusions. This individual does after all write one of the most influential Pagan blogs.

Welcome Home! PSG 2011

Cheerful reframe of “Welcome home” greeted me as I arrived at this years PSG. Suddenly immersed in a community of tolerance, open mindedness, joy and a sense of family I find my self struggling to keep up with the shift in paradigms. Smiles are sincere; hugs are warm and friends new and old envelope me in a cocoon of perfect love and perfect trust.

This community, temporary as it is, provides a living example of how humanity can achieve a truly peaceful and pluralistic way of living. Yes, some would rightfully point out that if the community were more long term many issues would arise. But please, just for this week, lets focus on all that is well with this Pagan microcosm of humanity.

Long conversations with members of the community have brought me peace, respite and retreat from the world of disasters that I generally inhabit this time of year. The dichotomy is intense, one day addressing the needs of thousands of fire fighters and just two days later enveloped in a safe community that feeds my spirit. I cannot think of two more different worlds.

Sleep comes and it is the sleep of the content. My eyes open not to new challenges but new possibilities, friendships and truly profound insights into my love for this community.

My heart at rest, I wish you also the opportunity to find your home, your place of belonging, your tribe.

Fire, it brings us warmth, safety and pushes back the darkness that we inherently approach with caution. This element that provides humanity so much is also a terrible and destructive force that can cause intense suffering and hardship when when invoked with reckless disregard.

More than three weeks ago two campers temporally walked away from their camp fire with little thought put into the force they had unleashed. Today the Wallow fire in Arizona has scorched more than 400,000 acres, burned dozens of structures and brought myself and many other fire responders to the point of total exhaustion.

This experience reminds my of the heavy responsibility and need for ethical standards for Witches follow when working with the elements. In a familiar reframe (Earth my body, Water my blood, Air my breath, and Fire my soul) we celebrate our ability to connect with the elements and move energy related to these natural forces. Do we, however, spend enough time considering that these forces need to be treated with respect, reverence, and responsible behavior?

With the smoke fresh in my lungs, mental pictures of those who lost their homes etched my minds eye and a sense of my own inability to significantly affect this disaster, I head of to the Pagan Spirit Gathering with a renewed sense of wonder for the natural world and what happens when humans abuse what the Goddess has provided.

I shall dance around the fire with great joy and respect, remember my magical responsibility and seek some time with Earth, Water and Air.

Witch wars revisited

Recent debate in the community about the label Pagan may well undermine many of the achievements this community has struggled so hard to obtain. As a community we have strength in numbers, our influence will only be eroded should individual paths diverge from the relative safety the Pagan umbrella.

Many of these individuals follow respected belief systems that have relatively few adherents in comparison to larger Pagan groups. It is a testament to the inclusiveness of our community that these groups are given equal time and space in the Pagan press and blogs to express themselves. This new Pagan media is the result of many decades of growth, education and outreach by the Pagan community.

Suddenly, small groups of sincere people have a great ability to influence debate in the broader Pagan community. While I applaud the participation, it is important to keep in mind that there are tens of thousands of Pagans and Wiccans that make up the backbone of the audience for this new media. There is little evidence that this issue has much credence among the majority of Pagans. It would seem that the desire of some to distance themselves from the Pagan identity is not reflected by their actions in posting to Pagan sites. These well-intentioned individuals ignore the privilege of their participation in a community that others have spent decades manifesting.

There are those of us who are old enough to remember the damage done by conflicts within the community in the past. Shall we split apart and revisit the days when the definition of our belief system was a divisive issue. Have we not learned from our own dark age (Witch wars of recent decades) that it is in unity that we achieve great freedoms for all who wish religious freedom to be the law of the land. Is it time once again to point the finger and label “the other” as separate and apart from us? Lets hope not.

Lessons from Texas

Writers in the Pagan community often confront attempts in the media to single out the Pagan community as “the other”. This process enables people to view our community as separate and not deserving of the protections that all Americans enjoy. My recent experience in responding to a disaster in a small Texas town was enlightening as to how this very process that we resist at every opportunity has subtly entered into my own thinking.

Jefferson Davis County in far southwest Texas is certainly a bastion of conservative thought and culture. Being there for three weeks felt like I had stepped back in time three decades. So what was this far left wing Wiccan doing in this cistern of extremist thought? Learning about the unity of humanity in crisis.

At home each day I read about conservative attempts to restrict the rights of women, children, religious minorities and Mother Earth herself. I read and become enraged, sign petitions, write articles and rally my friends in resistance. The conservative agenda has become the well-funded enemy with which I do battle.

On a hot and windy day in Fort Davis Texas I meet a young man and his five-year-old son. His truck featured stickers proclaiming his support for the NRA and George Bush. In casual conversation I learn that the fire I am responding to has reduced his home to ash. His strength and positive attitude is admirable. As he expresses his appreciation for all the firefighters who have responded to this emergency, I begin to wonder about my own beliefs about who and what it is that I am so focused on defeating. Certainly, this humble man walking in dignity after a great loss is not my opponent.

Have I engaged in the same kind of thinking that I so abhor? A re-examination of my thought process is certainly in order. As in all wars, in this war of ideas we risk becoming the thing we are attempting to defeat. Maybe the solutions we seek are in a more compassionate approach, the understanding smile, the strength of unity of purpose and intent. Have I lost my ability to view those with whom I disagree as others following their path in pursuit of what they believe is right and just? No, yet it is a precipice I nearly tumbled over.

Texas Wildfire Update

The situation with Texas Wildfires has yet to improve. My current assignment is to the Rock house fire which continues to defy our efforts to bring it under control. The fire is currently over 114,000 acres and growing.

The incident Management Team I am with is also staffing the entire west Texas area. We have two new fires to manage one at 99,000 acres and one at 70,000 acres. These fires bring to 8 the number of large fires we are managing.

We received bad news today that one firefighter died and two were critically burned in a "burn over" yesterday. May the Goddess comfort their families and all honor their sacrifice in service to their communities.

Millions of woman will no longer have access to birth control, cancer screenings, reproductive health services etc. This assault will return women to the days when deaths were common due to back room abortions. While many of you may have grown up in a time when these rights were taken for granted there are those who remember when women were relegated to the status of "less than" men, unable to make choices affecting their own bodies. It is time to tell your party ENOUGH! and take a stand that will ensure your rights and ability to make your own choices.

Saving Lives, Lady Pantera Makes a Difference

There are many Pagans in the world making a difference. Most are somewhat uncomfortable in sharing in a public forum what they are doing. For some, this reaction is simply a reflection of their belief that what they are doing is not remarkable. Yet as a community we need these examples of Pagans who walk their talk and manifest positive change in the world.

One such person is Lady Pantera, long time Florida Pagan community participant and former member of Everglades Moon Local Council of Covenant of the Goddess. For the past three years she has donated her time, talents and expertise as a cardiac nurse in support of children in need of open-heart surgery in Kingston Jamaica.

Today she leaves for another trip, as she glibly puts it on-line “Busy getting ready to Mend Li'l Broken Jamaican Hearts”. With twenty open heart surgeries planned she certainly is a “Pagan Who Gets Things Done.” We can only imagine the emotional investment that it takes to even be a Pediatric Cardiac Nurse, much less travel to impoverished nations and conduct these procedures in what must be challenging situations.

This Children’s cardiac program is led by the Cardiac Kids Foundation of Florida. While this great organization provides the funding, it is the volunteers such as Lady Panteria who donate their time to make it all work. For more information on this effort you can view a video documentary at:

Yes, I admire the work Lady Pantera is doing. She is a friend and an example of humanity at its best. Yet, I also know she is just one of thousands of Pagans making a difference in the world. Is someone you know making a difference? Urge them to let the community know what they are doing. As Pagans we can benefit from their example and leadership. Each of these individuals manifest positive changes daily, they inspire us to greater engagement in healing this one human community of which we are all a part.

When Pagans encounter Disaster

Last week in a small Georgia community residents exemplified the cohesion that a community can develop in the face of disaster. Wild Fire swept through their town and people of all races, faiths and cultures pulled together. Homes were lost to the power of Fire and the community exemplified what it means to be united in support of both the victims and responders.

Established groups served more than 4,500 meals to hundreds of firefighters. Families who lost their homes were provided shelter, clothing and income. There were no signs of the forces that would divide the community, only selfless compassion and true unity.

Is our Pagan community prepared to respond in centralized haste when Pagans face disaster? Should the worst happen and an American city is crippled are we able to come together and sustain meaningful relief for our Pagan sisters and brothers? In short, the answer is No!

Responding to disaster requires pre planning in funding, logistics and operations. Waiting for the disaster to strike to take action ensures that any effort will be short on success and long on confusion and debate.

As a community, we have recently proven that we can come together in mutual intent and manifest positive change in the world. Will this positive step in the maturation of our community create support for creation of a "Pagan Relief Services Coalition” that can plan for future events that effect Pagan families or communities?

Such an organization would need the participation of many well-established Pagan organizations; with advance commitments of funding, networking and organizational focus. While some suggest building a new unaffiliated organization, such an approach will lead to another ‘new’ organization competing for support of its efforts. It is in Pagan unity that such an organization could be realized.

When Hurricane Katrina inundated New Orleans, faith based organizations provided relief to their adherents. As a group, Pagan families had no such option. We as a community have arrived at a crossroads. Will we establish the ability to meet the needs of our community when disaster strikes; or will we ignore this opportunity to build a disaster infrastructure and make a difference?

Japan: Interview with Eric Ouannes, General Director, MSF Japan

Could you explain how MSF responded to the quake?

Well, rapidly. At least we tried to respond very rapidly. What we have looked at right from the beginning is a very small team trying to be flexible, mobile, modular. To be able to move from one place to another quite quickly and try to cover as much as distance as possible and visit as many evacuation centers as possible.

Can you tell us a bit about the national response to the earthquake and tsunamis?

It has been a massive response. Numbers are not very clear, but we speak about between 80,000 people and 250,000 people coming mainly from [Japan’s] Self Defense Forces, as well as other emergency medical mechanisms, and included in that [are] some other foreign aid groups or government aid groups.

What are the main issues in the places that we have seen in the area?

For the moment, in the 20 or 30 different evacuation centers we have visited, the main issues we're facing are chronic diseases among elderly people. Their treatment has been interrupted, so our doctors are looking at restarting the treatment to avoid that these elderly people fall into acute situations. Another issue is that communications have been very erratic over the last four days. It’s getting better but it's still quite difficult. Transportation is difficult. Roads were cut almost everywhere we went, as well as lack fuel for our cars.

For the people affected by the earthquake as well as the tsunamis, there are a number of issues: the cold—the weather is not really nice these days—as well as a lack of food, water. And the most urgent need is blankets to protect the most vulnerable sections of the population against the cold.

What kind of chronic diseases have we been seeing in the main?

The usual chronic diseases in an elderly population: hypertension, cardiac diseases, as well as diabetes. We are trying to restart the treatment, as I said earlier. We have also seen some cases of hypothermia on top of the other diseases I have spoken about, as well as dehydration. But again, it’s a limited number of cases with regards to the vast number of people who have been displaced or who have lost their homes.

Does MSF envisage a long-term involvement in this situation?

It’s too early to say. What we are looking at is contemplating expanding the team—the decision is not made yet—and to try and be more present in more locations, with near certitude that we have to go a little bit more north of the area where we are. We are now in the north of Miyagi prefecture and are trying to get to Iwate to see if similar needs exist, if there are similar gaps where MSF could have an added value. One thing that is clear is that the set up with these very flexible mobile teams is responding to the needs that we have identified at the beginning. We will continue with the same strategy, maybe expanding to more teams, covering more needs, but we are definitely not looking at a massive intervention with hundreds of international personnel coming from everywhere in the world. This is absolutely not what we are looking at the moment.

Why is that?

First, because there is a massive deployment of aid from the government and from foreign governments. It’s not a humanitarian crisis, at this stage. We cannot qualify this as a humanitarian crisis because most urgent needs are covered. A number of hospitals still function in the area, a referral system is still functioning, drugs are there, doctors are available in most of the hospitals.

Obviously, there are some gaps, but nothing abnormal in such a situation. And considering the scope of the disasters—and I say disasters, because there were several disasters—considering the scope of those disasters, there were gaps and we are here to try to fill those gaps.

What will MSF do in the event of a significant nuclear event or the situation in Fukushima getting worse than it already is?

We will evacuate our teams. That’s pretty simple. Today we are monitoring the situation on an hourly basis. We have radiometers [radiation detectors] with each of our personnel on the ground. We are cross checking the situation with various government and non-government agencies, and in many different locations in the world, not just Tokyo. And as soon as we reach a level that we consider an alarm for us, that could become unhealthy or dangerous for our teams, we will evacuate the team. We have the means to evacuate quite rapidly. Evacuation routes have been identified. So, yes, that’s what we will do.

What about treating illnesses caused by radiation? Is that something MSF can contemplate?

At this stage no. We are not experts on that. We are now trying to mobilize the entire network on the medical issue of nuclear radiation and trying to see. We have some people in our network of 25,000 or 30,000 people working in MSF who have worked in the past in this field of medicine, so we are trying now to collect this expertise to see if we could come with a particular response. This is more the duty of the Japanese government, and from what we hear or read in the news, they are already trying to prepare that.

Tonight we hit $20,000.00. Seems strange just a few short days ago when I posted this effort I thought maybe a few hundred. It was the dreamer in me that made me set such a High goal. And now it is within reach!

I am stunned, floored, impressed and awed by the efforts of this community. Can anyone ever again spread that old and tired sentiment that "Pagans can not work together"? We have proven that Pagans of all traditions can and DO work together to bring about positive change in the world.

Pagan Japan Relief Project Press Release

As of Thursday March 17 at 5:00p.m. The fundraising effort has raised $17,100.00 in roughly four days. There have been more than 300 donations leaving the effort with an average donation of just over $55.00. Donations have come primarily from individuals with only about 5% coming from organizations. Contacts have been made with dozens of Pagan organizations and the First Giving page has more than two thousand likes. The project would like to encourage people who may not have a lot of money to participate by giving smaller donations of $1.00 - $10.00.

It is with profound gratitude that we are able to report that the Pagan Japan Relief project has raised nearly $17,100.00 in its first four days of operation. The ability of the community to come together and support a unified effort to provide relief to disaster victims is humbling to all those involved.

It is important to note that it is in the first days after a disaster that organizations are most effective in fundraising efforts. With a goal of $30,000.00 it will be important for those involved to remain motivated in this effort and not let this become yesterdays news in the community. With this in mind, here are some suggestions for maintaining the momentum.

Facebook users can assist by reposting the donation link whenever they have not seen it come across their news feed in 24 hours. Remember we have thousands of community members who rarely check their e-mail much less social networking sites.

We can also roll this effort out to the broader community by bringing the cause to the attention of other Pagans at meet ups, Coven gatherings, groves, and guilds. Consider being the conduit for those who are willing to donate a few dollars and collect these funds for donation. Note that in charity giving credibility is important and those donating should be informed when their donation is posted.

Consider hitting the Facebook share button on the First Giving site after you have donated.

Consider holding a small fundraiser for the effort. In fundraisers, small tends to be better and does not overwhelm the community with logistical responsibilities.

Each of us has a right to take pride in this cooperative effort. In the last few days we have proved that the Pagan community can come together, that the threads that bind us are stronger than the forces that would separate us. Pagan and Proud is certainly a sentiment that all those involved have a right to embrace as a result of this community’s accomplishment over the last few days.

A small child sits crying in the shadow of a damaged structure in Haiti, hunger, fear and the grief at the loss of both family and the safety she once knew still haunts her. Today she still struggles to remain healthy; food and the lack of adequate medical care continue to be endemic.

And my heart bleeds.

In Kenya a teenage girl resorts to prostitution to feed her young child, brought to her through the violent act of rape. The slums of Nairobi offer her little hope of a better life.

And my heart bleeds.

Multiple families in Kashmir are homeless more than five years after a devastating earthquake. Children brought up to believe that the world does not care about their suffering, poor sanitation or lack of shelter.

And my heart bleeds.

Gunfire erupts as a grandmother attempts to cross a street in search of food to feed the grandchildren left to her. In Somalia, an entire generation has virtually vanished, victims of on ongoing civil war. A new generation is being raised on violence, self interest and fear.

And my heart bleeds.

My community is engaged in a noble effort to assist the victims of disaster in Japan. This is where the world’s attention is; this is where we can act, united in a common purpose.

Many have asked me why I am putting so much effort into this project. The simple answer is because of those we were not able to help in prior disasters. The world turned their attention in a different direction to soon. Deep inside me, there is regret and the knowledge of continued suffering. My heart bleeds for them; I stand witness to what we can do when we come together as a community. Yet I shed tears as witness to those in desperate need that we failed to help.

Yes, I am proud of my many roles in responding to disaster. I will give all I have to making a difference in the lives of those suffering in Japan. It is, however, my wish to reach just one more child, one more family, one more community before the world turns its attention somewhere else that drives me.

Each day I do a Google search of “Pagan news” in an attempt to keep up with what is new in our community. Imagine my surprise in encountering an article that says the world will end on May 21 of this year.

Upon opening this link I discovered that it referred to the Christian Rapture. Yes, I rolled my eyes, but then I began to think what the repercussions would be for the Pagan community if this event occurs. Even imagining a world that has suddenly experienced the departure of hundreds of millions of Christians is fascinating.

Imagine our country after 99% of our elected Federal officials have disappeared, leaving a few Hindus, Muslims and atheists to run the country. The opportunity to accomplish real change in our country could be UN matched in our short history.

And that is only the beginning of the opportunities for our community. Suddenly there would be tens of thousands of empty houses of worship. Arrange the pews in circles; replace the guy on the cross with the Goddess and the long held aspirations of our community to have permanent sacred space would be relized.

Yes, you may ask ‘how could we support all this’? Well imagine the job openings. Pagans suddenly would be in high demand. With experience as venders Pagans could take all the top jobs at say Wal-Mart. Can you imagine Wal-Mart stocked with organic Tie-dye, hemp clothing, Goddess products and solar panels?

Yep that’s right, a pluralistic society, responsibly using resources, government responsive to those seeking understanding and compassion, worship of the Goddess as a major religious practice. Seems to me this is a great idea.

So I say lets all get together and support the Christian hope for “The Rapture” After all, should such an event occur our community stands to gain so much.

Musings of a Dianic Male

Ok, so the statement “Dianic male” may seem unusual but the experience of living with a Dianic Witch for eight years has profoundly affected my practice as a Witch. Living for many years where there were no other Pagan groups than the local Dianic Coven left me with a treasure trove of experiences that have shaped my beliefs about the craft in general.

Participation with this group has included attending open rituals, living with them in camps at Pagan festivals and developing strong relationships with the coven members over the years. Many of these women have become my loved sisters whose wisdom and friendship I cherish dearly.

What have I learned? First, being the partner of a strong Dianic Witch is not for everyone. Second, all of us have and continue to be influenced by the patriarchal society in which we live. Third that service to the Goddess can take many forms and that power, dominance and the need to direct have no place in my worship of the Goddess.

In service to this group there have been many opportunities to get to know the “new” male partners of coven members. With each meeting a conversation ensued about the nature of a relationship with coven members. These interactions tended to include how strong this group of women are, the need to be willing to support and serve their activities without attempting to influence and how a strong sense of the masculine self is required to remain grounded in these relationships. One by one I have witnessed these individuals struggle with these issues and move on in their lives seeking new partners and experiences.

Setting up camp, tearing down camp, planning the days activities, preparing meals, planning open rituals or just informal gatherings, all these activities are lead by powerful women. Some men just are not prepared to truly participate in a culture where the leaders are women. In this there is no judgment. All of us are affected by the messages of the broader society and I have many times had to examine my own reactions when excluded from the decision making process. Each time it has been my ability to access members of the coven and discuss these feelings that has allowed me to grow and transcend patriarchal attitudes and beliefs.

As an observer I have witnessed how the coven operates and seen what happens when a male voice is raised in the decision making process. Generally there is a shift of energy from a collaborative process to one focused on influence and power. It is not just the male voice that represents this change but the behavior of the coven members also. This experience has given me insight into the sacred nature of Dianic tradition. Each of us, male and female, is a product of our experience. In reclaiming the sacred feminine strong women need the space to express their power in an environment that puts little value on conflict, force and other patriarchal traits and great value on the feminine principles of compassion, understanding, communication and sisterhood.

All this is not to say that I do not value the sacred masculine. As a member of the community I have been involved in many groups where my skills, abilities and masculine energy have been of service to the community. As an individual that identifies with the heavily male influenced “warrior” archetype, it has been my privilege to be of service as a guardian, healer, and administrative leader. Yet, when I wish to contribute it is through the eyes of the Goddess that I attempt to view situations and tasks. This approach allows me to proceed with compassion and be mindful that in service to the Goddess it is my first responsibility to act in a manner that honors the entire community.

Within Dianic tradition there is the concept of “the Kouretes” who are considered the male equivalent of the Dianic Priestess. “One of their roles is to help women create their Sacred Space, then to leave, and guard against other men interfering with the Sacred Womyn's Mysteries.” This is a role that it has been my honor to fulfill.

All this leaves me to wonder how can I also support men in my community who are partnered with strong Dianic Witches. Here are a few suggestions that have worked for me.

Support the reclaiming of the sacred feminine by supporting your partner and her coven in any way you can. It can be a deeply meaningful experience to witness this manifestation of a principle that our community is based on.

Develop your own practice within the community where you can participate and develop and reclaim your own sacred masculine energy.

Take the opportunity to examine your own beliefs and actions around conflict, power, control and leadership. You have at hand a community that is an example of how powerful compassion, trust, communication and the sacred feminine can be.

While I am highly eclectic in my practice as a Witch, the Dianic influences I have experienced hold great meaning for me. Being associated with women of this tradition has taught me many valuable lesions in my quest to honor the Goddess. I am ever grateful too all my Dianic sisters.

PantheaCon and Divine Exhaustion

There are those opportunities in life that are too valuable to miss where food, sleep and self care are swept aside by profound conversation, engaging in service, building meaningful relationships and basking in community; Pantheacon is such an experience. From the moment of arrival it is obvious this is a Pagan gathering of a different sort. Here there is every manifestation of Pagan community one could wish for. Practitioners of so many paths that an old fashioned roll-a-dex would be necessary to keep track of them all.

Emerging from the room each morning on little sleep, in search of coffee, turned into a rollercoaster ride of Divine inspiration. Not once was the search for coffee not interrupted with a conversation that was so meaningful that time and space did not fold together into a sacred container that held the entire day. Lost in this multiplicity of insightful experience the individual self becomes but a vibrating thread in a community tapestry of immense diversity.

Forever changed by this manifestation of what our community can be, exhausted by unconscious effort to experience more than is humanly possible, I am unable to even sort through and identify the specifics of what has made this impression on me. It is as if great waves of trust, love, insight and joyful exuberance have battered my very essence.

This weekend I had the honor of witnessing community as the Goddess intended it. The experience was an emotional and spiritual marathon, exhausting yet incredibly meaningful. Spent, with heavy eyes, I send my gratitude to all who made this experience possible for me.

PantheaCon Journey, Day One

Day one of my trip was filled with the mundane (flights), the lack of sleep, (worst seat on the plane) and the Magical, staying with a long time friend in Oakland. For obvious reasons I will skip on filling you in on the first two.

Arriving at my friend’s home in the middle of the night was transformative. After a day full of logistical concerns I was suddenly immersed in sacred space. As my friend opened the door to her home I was overwhelmed with the energy of the space. Dozens of little testaments to the Goddess fill the space. If I had to describe the ultimate “witchy” space this would be it. Every nook and cranny is filled with the magical and the artistic.

Being enveloped in this sacred space lead to the feeling of coming home to my tribe, my community, to where I belong. After a short nights sleep my friend fixed me breakfast, Yum! Our conversation turned to the Pagan communities tendency to use labels and how these can be counter productive to unity and limiting to individual growth. From labels that reflect traditions to those that identify sexual orientation we covered much ground.

It is hard to express how much I appreciate the ability to have deep and meaningful conversations with loved members of the Pagan Community. Living so far away from community has made me even more sensitive to how important this is.

This journey could not have started in a more meaningful way. I am home, grounded, open to the Goddess and all she has to teach me.

PantheaCon, In Service to the Goddess

As I prepare for my trip to PantheaCon I am filled with excitement and expectation for a great event. This opportunity to interact with and learn from a vast array of individuals whom I have followed for years is unmatched in my experience.

As I pack I am reminded of what has always been the most meaningful part of attending Pagan events; Interacting with my Pagan brothers and sisters. Each past event I have attended started with high expectations and the intent of being of service to the Pagan community. Yes I am planning on attending some presentations, party a little and hopefully gain some insights and ideas that will support my continued growth on my chosen path, but it is service that will be my focus...

Over the years I have learned that by placing myself “in service” to the community I have the greatest opportunity for growth. Some have urged me to establish a high profile in support of organizations with which I am involved. For me, a more important activity is to support my community in tangible ways that do not necessarily command attention.

While I highly value and respect those who present, teach, lead ritual and are in service in a very public way, those whom I most respect and value at events are the dish washers, gate keepers, trash collectors, security personal and medical responders. There is great dignity and expression of the Divine in quietly being of service to others. These are individuals who “Walk The Talk” and I consider my self honored to be counted as one of their number.

So if you are attending Pantheacon and you see someone moving tables, setting up a room or any of the other hundreds of tasks that need to be done, offer to pitch in for a few minutes. It is possible that you will find it the most rewarding activity of the entire event.

PantheaCon and the New Pagan Media

Most of those I know would agree that a free press is an inherent necessity in maintaining a democratic society. Over the last few years we have all witnessed the escalation of hyperbole in the mainstream press. This trend towards the “Yellow Journalism” that was so present in the first part to the twentieth century threatens our nation and all minority communities. When the rhetoric turns to our community it is our Pagan press that responds with reason and a voice of moderation.

In this century, we have seen the emergence of the Internet with its ability for single individuals and small organizations to participate in the global conversation. Members of the “Pagan new media” have seized on this development and created a credible Pagan news community that stresses journalistic integrity, accuracy in reporting and the inclusion of those from all traditions within our community.

There is a fundamental difference between this new internet based press and the much admired periodicals that have been around for years. Today, Pagans can get daily updates on developing stories of interest to the community. This development means that we are informed, current and most importantly have reliable information not based on personal opinion or conjecture.

This new media have the ability to “call to action” our community like never before. Recently we have witnessed the success of the VA Pentacle project, Pagans responding financially to the crisis in Haiti and overwhelming support for the right of Pagan prisoners to have access to paid Pagan clergy. While there are many organizations in our community that can take pride in these developments: it is our new Pagan press that is the driving force behind the wide support for these causes.

The recent publication of the Pantheacon schedule of events reflects the importance of this new press. With three different presentations on the media, multiple discussion groups and a film showing hosted by a member of the Pagan press it clear that our media have become an influential force in our community and beyond. Further evidence of this new influence is provided by the inclusion of members of the Pagan media in publications such as The Washington Post, Belief Net, Patheos and others.

The members of this “Pagan new press” are in the drivers seat in terms of the direction our community will take in the future. Each of them has proven that they can be trusted with this immense responsibility. If you are going to PantheCon, take the time to meet this committed group of individuals. Each of them are in service to the entire Pagan community.

It would not be possible to write on this subject with out pointing out that the standard barer for the development of this new press is Jason Pitzl-Waters. Jason has taken the Wild Hunt to a level where it represents the best in journalistic excellence. It is important to note that Jason’s approach has not been to build a successful operation of his own but replicate his own success with the creation of the Pagan Newswire Collective. Add to these achievements Jason’s’ support for other competing Pagan news and discussion outlets and it is clear that his interest is in developing a diverse and positive journalistic community.

Having stated my admiration for our community of journalists let me ask: is this sustainable? While very few have managed to develop funding for their efforts, many more write and report on the Pagan community on their own time without pay. Whether you are a fan of the Wild Hunt, Patheos, Belief Net or one of the Pagan Newswire Collective bureaus, come forward and offer real support in a way that encourages this important asset to the Pagan community.

Anyone who has read this piece knows that I am no writer, yes I have a Blog where I share my experiences and opinions, but I do not possess the skills or ability to be a real writer. What I hope has come across is how important I think it is that we support those who do.

A Pagan and Emotional Authenticity

During a recent interaction with a friend where my feelings were hurt I was reminded if the importance of owning my emotions and avoiding the temptation to express myself in a less than authentic manor. As human beings we have all faced this many times. Strong emotions tend to lead to the incorporation of long standing issues, opinions and feelings into current situations. Inevitably this promotes the breakdown of honest communication, insight, love and compassion.

Avoiding this requires that we maintain contact with the initial emotion and not allow adjunct feelings and thoughts to interfere with our ability to gain insight into the base emotion. The temptation to engage in blaming, judgment, anger or rationalization is strong as we internally attempt to reconcile and resolve our emotional distress. It is, however, in the honest expression of the core emotion that we have the opportunity to achieve real communication, love, respect and understanding.

Yes I know this is a pretty basic concept expressed in common dictums like “it’s not fair to kitchen sink someone” Yet my recent experience got me to thinking about how maintaining an authenticity of emotional expression is important in my personal life as well as the broader Pagan community with which I am involved.

Do we as a community remain authentic in our emotional communication? As discussion points two questions come to mind.

First, when we use terms like “Fluff Bunny” to identify individuals who see only goodness and light in our community do we take the legitimate emotion of annoyance and let it lead us to identify ‘the other’ as separate and apart from us with a derogatory label?

Second, in the often quietly expressed suspicion of well-known Pagan leaders motivations, is jealously being expressed as mistrust, fear or antagonism? More to the point, does this lack of authenticity negatively affect the ability of Pagan groups and individuals to work together in our common interest?

As a Witch I would like to believe that I have grown beyond the temptation to engage in emotional thoughts and expressions that are less than authentic. Of course, as a human being this struggle is ongoing. At times I experience strong feelings that require me to engage in introspection and develop an understanding of the core emotion prior to expressing myself in our community.

As an example let me state that I am at times envious of members of our community engaged in interfaith work. Upon sitting with this emotion and considering my own beliefs and attitudes it has become clear that my reaction is about my lack of time, motivation and maybe even ability to develop an effective skill set to meaningfully participate in this movement that I so admire. By examining the core emotion I have come to a place where my respect for these individuals has increased and I am able to express my envy with authenticity.

On a more personal level, in my recent experience where I took the time to consider my core emotion of hurt I was able to express myself authentically and received in exchange love, understanding and support. When I was young I was taught to bite my tongue and think before I speak, interesting how the lessons from so long ago remain so powerful in my life.

Back To Basics

Confined, discontented, infuriated at events, what is missing? How to overcome these feelings of melancholy? Action, a return to what I know and believe makes a difference at a personal level.

Today I will, venture out from these four walls that were constructed to shelter me from the very thing I worship.

Today I will, place my hands in the soil, work with the dirt to manifest something, no matter how small.

Today I will, engage the sacred I perceive in another person and have a discussion about all that is honorable in the world.

Today I will, celebrate what I have in common with all peoples of the Earth.

Today I will, view art as an attempt to emulate the beauty that is the Goddess expressed all around me.

Today I will, gaze at the sunset and revel in the radiance of Mother Earth.

Tonight I will, sit in the darkness and consider the mysteries of life.

Tonight I will, fall peacefully asleep because I have taken a day to rediscover the Goddess and the Divine in myself.

When I awake, I will remember what it means to be a Witch.

Haiti One Year Later

Last night I received an e-mail from a member of COG asking me to give an update to the Pagan community on the progress in Haiti one year later and my personal insights as someone who responded to the disaster.

Sitting hear shaking my head with tears welling in my eyes may not be the best frame of mind to write an informative narration on the state of Haiti. Each day I follow the lack of progress in Haiti. My computer is filled with maps of cholera treatment centers across the country. My thoughts turn to the suffering I witnessed often. There are days when my heart beats for Haiti and Haiti alone.

It is true that the Goddess blessed me with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of hundreds who were suffering; few will ever be so blessed and troubled at the same time.

Those who have not been there cannot understand the nature of life in Haiti. As an example, put your self in the position of a resident of Port-au-Prince who has to choose between spending what little he has on cab fare to take his mother to a doctor OR feeding his four children for the next week. Choose one, your mother dies or your children starve. For those of us living in the US such choices are unimaginable.

For the last few hundred years Haiti has been ruled by a governing class known as the eleven families. In Haiti nothing happens without their approval and cut of “the action”. All of us have seen the reports of the Billions pledged that have not reached the people of Haiti. It is these eleven families that are the problem. Even the President of Haiti would be without influence lacking their support.

As an example of this dynamic, consider a small non-profit that has had an ambulance at the port in Haiti for months “in customs”. Officials at the port are demanding more than $15,000.00 in import fees. The ambulance was purchased used for less than $5,000.00. This small organization contacted the government to complain and received a letter from the president’s office declaring the ambulance exempt from import fees. Upon presentation of the letter officials stated “we do not care what the president says”. Corruption is endemic in Haiti.

Figuring out how to be effective in Haiti is beyond complex. Large NGO’s are holding the funds that were donated as they have an ethical obligation to use them wisely and not contribute to corruption. Yet, the path of profiteering is the only effective way of accomplishing anything of scale in Haiti.

All this is not to say there is no hope. I continue to assist small NGO’s that are making a real difference in Haiti. These organizations are so small and under the radar that they are able to provide real assistance to small communities. One of these organizations is 100% for Haiti, we have built a school, purchased chairs, desks, and books and provided a salary for a teacher. These accomplishments have been made possible by our efforts to stabilize the community with health care and food assistance. In Haiti one must start with the basic needs first.

The complexity of acting in Haiti has become even more perplexing with the arrival of dozens of faith-based organizations. These so-called humanitarian organizations are proselytizing and building anger and resentment towards those who exclusively practice Voodoo. It is important to understand that in Haiti those who profess to be Christians do not deny the power of Voodoo. In fact they have been lead to believe that Voodoo rituals are the cause of much of the suffering in Haiti. This dynamic with 70% of the population Christian and 100% believing in Voodoo makes for a very dangerous situation.

Add to this cauldron of religious intolerance a destroyed infrastructure, politics, cholera, huge sums of money, hundreds of NGO’s, a long-standing foreign army (U.N.) and stir. What you end up is a brew that is beyond volatile.

Will I return to Haiti? If I could figure out a way to do so without my home being foreclosed on I would be there now. My heart remains in Haiti, it is my hope that my efforts to relieve the suffering will one day enable me to retrieve it.

Tea Party, Responsible or Irresponsible?

Those who would hold Sarah Palin responsible for the recent attack in Arizona miss the mark. Palin and the entire Tea Party movement should be held irresponsible. History is littered with those who use the rhetoric of violence to achieve their goals. The use of language and images that call to mind the use of violent force is beyond the pale.

One of the basic lessons of our belief system is that words and images have power. Did Palin and the Tea Party movement directly call individuals to violence? No, what they have done is even more sinister. By using images like "Cross hairs” and language laced with violence like “time to lock and load” they have created a climate of hatred and fear in the political discourse in this country along with the subliminal message that violence is acceptable. Conveniently, the use of these tactics leaves their movement with plausible deniability when acts of violence occur as a result of their hate mongering.

There are many who will come to the defense of the Tea Party as a result of this incident and rightly point out that they do not support violence. These individuals support the conservative ideals espoused by this young and immature political movement. As part of the political discussion, conservatism is a legitimate viewpoint in the national debate. Yet, if conservatives continue to support those who irresponsibility use violent rhetoric and imagery, veiled as political opinion, they should be held irresponsible as well.

Walking the Talk, 10 Pagans Who Made A Difference in 2010

This is my highly subjective list of Pagans who “Walked the Talk” in 2010. As I write this I have a list of more than three dozen names sitting next to me, what a great community. Most of the people on this list you will know, some maybe not. All have created a lasting impression on me during 2010.

10. Katrina Messenger

Connect DC is a group that focuses on public ritual. Katrina Messenger’s work with this organization has created a sense of openness and interconnectedness within the DC Pagan community. As the founder of the Reflections Mystery School, a facility member of Cherry Hill and organizer of the Sweeping the Capital Clean event Katrina has a long history of service to the community. It is however, her focus on providing public community for all Pagans that brought her to my attention as a Pagan that “Walks the Talk”.

9. Amber K

2010 has been a financially rough year for those attempting to build Pagan organizations. Ardantane Pagan Learning Center in New Mexico is no exception. Amber K could have easily given up on this mission that serves the entire Pagan community. Through these hard times she has remained steadfast, of good humor, and committed to making a difference. Her determination and ability to see the Magik in even these trying times should be an example for all Pagans who aspire to serve our community.

8. Alane Brown

When Disaster struck in Haiti Alane made it her personal business to insure that the Pagan community was motivated to provide assistance to the victims. Alane spent countless hours fundraising and making connections with a wide range of Pagan organizations. She did not stop there, she also wrote a song for Haiti fundraising and convinced a group of incredible woman to record it. When tragedy struck she took action, reflecting the best of what the Pagan community has to offer.

7. Star Foster

Ms. Foster’s management of the Pagan Portal at Patheos has manifested an open forum for Pagans of all paths. Unity in purpose, open-mindedness and respect for alternative views are hallmarks of the Pagan Portal. Patheos is a site that has Portals for all of the major faiths. Star has helped establish Paganisms place at the table of interfaith dialog for a new generation. Star puts her belief that all faiths have value into practice. She has demonstrated her ability to “Walk the Talk”

6. Iris Freemoon and the Firefly House

Many may not be aware of the Firefly House. This small organization in Washington DC represents the best in what a small activist Pagan organization can accomplish. During 2010 the Firefly House has participated (provided all the logistical support) for the Lady Liberty Leagues 25Th. Anniversary, created an online ritual for healing in Haiti that had broad national participation and has just concluded a soap drive in response to the epidemic in Haiti. Members of this community are not content to sit around and talk about current events, they take action. Firefly as an emerging tradition has much to offer the Pagan community

5. Starhawk

There could be books written on this individual. What impresses me most is that she continues to provide “literally” down to earth leadership to our community. As a Pagan who exemplifies the concept of “Walking the Talk” no list would be complete with out Starhawk.

4. Selena Fox

Circle Sanctuary with the leadership of Selena continues to make enormous contributions to the Pagan community. Salina’s relentless pursuit of rights for Pagans never comes to an end. Her work this year in supporting Pagan prisoner’s rights, establishing a Pagan cemetery and supporting Pagan soldiers overseas is a true example of “Walking the Talk”

3. Rev. Don Frew

This has been my year to become acquainted with the Work of Don Frew. Frankly, his accomplishments and intellectual approach to Interfaith Dialogue leave me in awe. His total emersion in the interfaith community has brought much change in how the Pagan community is viewed not only in this country but also internationally. If there were any one person who deserves more accolades for his accomplishments in the Pagan community I would suggest Don Frew

2. Jason Pitzl-Waters

Over the course of this year The Wild Hunt has reinforced its reputation as the premier location for Pagan centered news. It is however, Jason’s efforts in establishing the Pagan Newswire Collective that places him near the top of this list. Instead of being satisfied with his success, Jason forged ahead and gave birth to a whole new media model that will survive the advent of The Wild Hunt and bring responsible Pagan centered news too generations to come. His determination and organizing ability makes him a Pagan who “Walks the Talk”.

1. Patrick McCullom

Patrick McCollum’s efforts on behalf of the Pagan community are well known and do not to be listed here. Patrick’s actions alone leave him at the top of this list. What many do not know is that while he has some limited funding from national organizations the majority of his legal and travel expenses come out of his own pocket. Here is an individual who puts everything he has on the line in support of our community. What Rev. McCollum does is beyond “Walking the Talk” My hope is that the Pagan community will provide him with additional funding in the future.

Building Tropical Fairy Houses

There are times when my very being calls out for the Goddess. For weeks it has been the holidays, work and my online Pagan friends that have dominated my daily life. From somewhere deep inside I was yearning for tangible contact with the Divine. Listen Peter; the Goddess is telling you something.

Now I sit here typing with dirt packed under my fingernails, grounded and at peace with my self and with the Goddess. What caused this transformation? What ritual do I engage in that always brings me back to balance?

Well, I build Fairy houses, that’s right Fairy houses. Sounds kind of silly but it is a ritual that has deep meaning for me. These houses are built with grass, dead down wood and leaves. As I gather what I need in the woods I am always reminded of how Gaia provides everything we need in our environment if we are just willing to open our eyes and see. On this small scale I reconnect with the idea of living simply with the earth, taking only what I need from the abundance that surrounds me.

As I begin construction of the Fairy home there is a very deep part of me that is comforted by creating, building, and providing shelter with only the forest to draw upon. The energies of Cernunnos and Pan find expression in the work and envelope me.

Hands digging in the dirt I become mindful of those who came before and their simple and very connected way of life. In these moments I find solace, insight and a powerful connection to Divinity. Dirt, sweat and focus combine to keep me in the moment, experiencing all that the Goddess has to tell me.

For some, an eloquent ritual brings a connection to the Divine. For me, it is the simple experience of being in nature, creating with my hands, and listening to what Goddess has to say.

I walk away from the new tropical Fairy home reminded that I am of the People of the Earth ever blessed and provided for by the Goddess.

When spring comes where you live try building a fairy house in a forest. Perhaps the Goddess will speak to you as well.

DADT, We Will Be Watching!

The great advance of 2010: repeal of the military “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy is being celebrated in the United States. This achievement is a major advance in establishing equality for all Americans. Success feels sweet, the forces of hatred, fear and intolerance have been beaten back in terms of the rights of gays in the service; or have they?

History provides a multitude of examples of recently established civil rights being subverted by the institution of insidious policies, laws and false charges.

When people of color were granted the right to vote, bigots rushed to establish laws affecting voting rights. Identification laws were passed and residency requirements were established to prevent Americans of color from participating in our democratic system.

Upon the passage of the 19th amendment, women were granted the right to vote. Surely their time had come, religious, parental, and contractual rights would flow from this historic change. Many decades would pass until these predictions came true. The patriarchy reacted predictably and established policies, laws, procedures and hiring practices to thwart the civil rights of women for decades.

We know that the Civil Rights Act established rights for minorities. Yet, people of other racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds were accused of outlandish behavior by those in power as a cover for their now illegal discrimination.

Where am I going with this? Now comes the time when those who cannot let go of their prejudices will seek to craft implementation of this policy in such a way as to allow them to continue their now illegal actions. Good patriotic soldiers will come out and be accepted, others will face abuse, false charges of misconduct and discharge. History tells us that this battle will be ongoing. Those opposed to the repeal of DADT will fight back, engage in unethical behavior and attempt to subvert the civil rights of our brave soldiers.

To those officers in charge of the implementation of this policy, we will be watching. We will not allow our brave men and women to suffer false accusation, verbal abuse, harassment or denial of their rights. You will be held accountable for developing a culture of tolerance within your commands. We know the fight is not over and

The Reason For The Season - Family

Tonight the young lady whom I have had the privilege of helping raise returned home from college for a holiday visit. Suddenly the house is a home again. This manifestation of the Goddess in her maiden form returns great energy to our home. Inside, my entire body smiles with a mix of Joy, Curiosity, Love and even Pride.

These feelings remind me of the blessings I enjoy in my life. Even more, I am reminded that much of the Magik in life flows not from my personal practice but my ability as a Witch to see the Divine all around me. Overwhelmed with these emotions, insights into the true “Reason for the Season”, wash over me.

The Internet is filled with debate on the Pagan vs. Christian origins of the holiday season. Yet, with the arrival of this very special person I am reminded that the real reason is the Magik that is family, loved ones and fond memories. From a very early age it was the gathering of those close to my family that created the real Magik. Yes, as a child I went to church on Christmas and as an adult I embrace and celebrate the Solstice. Still, the warm embrace of loved ones has no equal in this season or any other.

So my friends, this season I wish you the true love of family and friends. The real “Reason for the Season”

Reflections on World AIDS Day

This morning, after coffee, I logged into Facebook to see what my friends are focusing on today. Many posts brought my attention to December 1, 2010 being World AIDS Day. As a matter of focus, AIDS has faded in my priority list of issues. These posts got me to thinking about why I am no longer motivated in this worthy cause. Frankly, it is the success in the fight against AIDS that has drawn me into this abyss of casualness concerning AIDS.

Recently, a new friend disclosed to me that he has HIV and is currently stable with the virus at undetectable levels. My immediate reaction was “what a pain to have to deal with a chronic condition like AIDS.” It is exactly this attitude that is the problem in the current effort against AIDS. In western countries, individuals with HIV have access to medications. In the rest of the world no such access exists. Millions continue to die from HIV where medication and education is nonexistent. This year the theme for World AIDS Day is “Universal Access and Human Rights”.

This world has the ability to fight the spread of HIV through education and medications, yet funding for the effort is dependent upon those nations with economic ability staying focused on the goal. The attitude that AIDS is a chronic condition, leads to a lack of funding and an unethical disregard for millions suffering worldwide.

This is a Human Rights issue; join me in focusing on access to treatment and education worldwide. AIDS is not yesterday’s issue, the goal is within sight and we can be successful if we resist the temptation view what is happening in our communities as representative of the world situation.

Thank you to those in my community who posted information on World AIDS Day. Your information created a change in my thinking and prevented me from becoming too comfortable in my little world.

Voices from the Pagan Hinterlands

Over the past few months as part of my duties in service to a Pagan organization, many individuals who are what I call Involuntary Solitaries have contacted me. To a person, these individuals express a deep desire to learn from, circle with and create social ties with the larger Pagan community.

These seekers represent a wide variety of different circumstances. Some live in very rural conservative communities. Others hail from countries such as Indonesia, Croatia, and the UAE. All are seeking the Goddess without the support of a community.

Attempting to connect this group of fellow Pagans with Elders within our communities has been frustrating. Most of the individuals I have contacted are very busy with their own traditions, events, and personal lives.

The thing that concerns me is that these followers of the Goddess are on the front lines of our growing community. As individuals they risk more than most of us can imagine in following their paths. One specific individual lives in a country where witchcraft is an offence that draws a life sentence.

While computers and social media sites have created some avenues for these individuals to obtain information and develop casual contacts in the Pagan community, they are expressing a deep yearning for a more meaningful experience where real friendships can be formed. The Internet, while a great tool, does not replace the sound of a real voice expressing heartfelt solidarity.

It has been my privilege to have multiple phone contacts with one of these “Involuntary Solitaries”. During these conversations I have witnessed tears brought on by gratitude, insights gained through conversation and a real friendship develop. Most of all, this individual has reminded me how blessed I am to live in a society that tolerates alternative belief systems. This experience has been very meaningful to me as part of my path of service to the community.

Join me in supporting these seekers who have very few alternatives. With very little effort you can make a huge difference in the life of one these “Involuntary Solitaries”. This season seek out someone who practices alone due to geographic location and make a new friend. You may find it is one of the best decisions you have ever made. It was for me.

Strength in Diversity on Thanksgiving

Recently Pagans from a wide range of belief systems have shared information, ideas and positions on the celebration of Thanksgiving. What stands out in this conversation is the sense of a broad and respectful dialog among those that hold some but not necessarily all beliefs in common.

As we consider what we are giving thanks for this season, let us consider how grateful we should be to be involved in a community that encourages the respectful exchange of ideas and beliefs. In our community, we tend to be informed by these interactions rather than become fractured and more divided by them.

While some Pagans are enjoying a traditional family holiday, others are engaged in events that focus on the effects on our indigenous peoples of colonization, others are simply forgoing any recognition in solidarity with members of the Native American community.

There is much that I have to give thanks for today. Most of all I am grateful for our community where dogma, institutional thinking and the proselytizing of ideas are nearly absent in the public discourse.

Let us not forget that this community, our brothers and sisters, are engaged in building a paradigm that has at it’s center tolerance, respect, open mindedness and free expression. Our world could benefit from this example where individuals feel free to express their beliefs and ideas through action without fear of condemnation and exclusion from those who believe differently.

Our world and community is very complex and provides many opportunities for gratitude. On this holiday, however, I am choosing to focus on my gratitude for the very existence of our incredible Pagan community.

Today I am grateful to you, my Pagan brothers and sisters, for providing a safe place, filled with compassion for me to grow in my path.

Compassion, - It’s not just for your friends anymore

Much of my time lately has been spent considering the concept of compassion and its power to set humanity on a new course. As part of this interest I have been focusing on the examples of compassion that I see in my daily life. This experience has been an eye opener.

While I have witnessed many examples of compassion between friends and members of communities, much less common are examples of compassion expressed for those outside our comfort zones. Inherent in the understanding of compassion as a spiritual principle is the ability to apply it to “The Other”. This concept requires that we direct compassion to those who are different than ourselves in religion, race, culture, economic status, nationality, political ideology, gender identity etc.

As a Pagan, my heart breaks when I hear stories of Pagan children being tormented for their beliefs. This reaction, however, is not a reflection of spiritual compassion, only my normal human tendency to empathize with those with whom I share a commonality. Spiritual compassion is not the same as the emotional response we feel when a member of our community experiences a tragedy.

As the concept of compassion for “others” becomes more central to my thinking, every thing I do begins to be informed by it. Compassion is at its most powerful when expressed in support of those whom we have very little in common. Knowing this I had to ask myself some hard questions.

Am I as passionate about the rights of other religions as my own?

As a straight man, am I ardent about other’s ability to freely and openly embrace their gender identity?

When I engage those on the political right, do I speak with respect, compassion and a willingness to listen?

Would I risk my life to save a stranger as I would my friends and family?

My answers to these questions and many more are helping me focus on the practice of compassion in my daily life. It is, however, a broader application of this principle that represents the best hope for humanity. In the end, we are one human community who must live together. To do this we as people, communities, nations, and religions must embrace compassion as the road to understanding, tolerance, cooperation and peace.

Goddess of Compassion

Many scholars of religion have postulated as to the nature of the Divine. Even within our Pagan community there are a wide range of opinions. While I find much to be admired in an academic approach to divinity it is the central concept of compassion that drives my relationship with the Goddess and the universe around me.

Once again this has been reinforced by personal experience. While traveling in a third world country it was clear that compassion is the most powerful force of magic that I know.

Each of us holds prejudices, opinions, and a framework of viewing the world that isolates us from aspects of the human experience. When these are tempered by compassion we begin to see the oneness of the human experience.

One cannot visit third world countries and not experience a wave of compassion. On a deeper level, the experience shreds any pre-conceived notions we have about poverty, race, culture and economic status.

Suddenly, my conception of my life style as middle class was torn away as I faced the reality of the abundance that I enjoy. Viewing real poverty, created compassion, which resulted in gratitude.

Walking around the slums of Nairobi, the only Caucasian in miles, the reality of the legacy of slavery and colonialism confronts my views of race. My belief that racism will soon be a relic of the past is confronted by the very real suffering still being endured as a result of the barbaric actions of my European ancestors. Compassion for those unable to let go this legacy fills me with insight, understanding and a sense of responsibility.

My very western belief that hard work, education and determination leads to success was confronted by the reality of a mother of four too weak from hunger to rise from the dirt floor where she huddles with her children. Cultural ideals that I hold strongly shattered by the reality I face. Compassion washed over me as I internalized a change in my worldview.

Speaking to a young mother, a member of Kenya’s emerging middle class, I realize that what she has accomplished is astounding. Also, I am struck by the fact that her middle class status means that she still has much less than those who live in government projects in the United States. No matter how hard this woman works she will likely never be able to achieve what even the most unfortunate in my country take for granted. Again I am filled with compassion for her situation and a new understanding of what economic status really means.

Over the course of my life it has always been this experience of compassion that has allowed me to grow, understand others and tear down the walls that separate me from humanity and divinity. It is through this, I believe feminine principle, of compassion that the Goddess guides me in this life.

Home now I gaze around me, abundance flows from every direction. All the “important issues” that I care about seem a little less urgent. Filled with compassion for others the Goddess is present in my thoughts, actions and beliefs.
Some have put forward that love is the greatest expression of the Divine.

I would argue that compassion is the greatest expression of the Goddess.

Small NGO’s and the Humanitarian Logistics Association

Have you ever felt humbled when in the company of a group of individuals who are leaders in their field? That was exactly my experience attending the Humanitarian Logistics Association ( HLA ) general Assembly in Nairobi Kenya. With years of experience doing government based disaster response, this impression is not the result of a lack of knowledge, but rather a reflection of how specialized humanitarian logistics is.

As a board member of a small NGO the need to acquire and master effective logistical skills cannot be overstated. With the creation of the HLA, a point of access to the knowledge of leaders with organizations such as the UN, OXFAM, ICRC, World Food Program and many others is available to small NGO’s. Each of these individuals sharing their years of hard won lessons in both formal presentations and after hours conversations. It is not an exaggeration to say that the collective efforts of the attendees at this conference have saved millions of lives around the world.

This organizations’ focus on individual membership creates an even playing field where there is an open exchange of information, lessons learned and best practices among all participants. Additionally, HLA’s participation in the development of formal certification programs presents an opportunity for smaller NGO’s to establish professional logistics development programs with international scope and recognition.

Specifically at this conference I had the opportunity to:

Learn about the unique challenges in supply chain logistics within the humanitarian field.

Begin building invaluable contacts that will serve my organization well.

Focus on issues surrounding ethical cargo contracting.

Engage in discussions on cultural sensitivity in international response.

Develop an understanding of the logistics cluster concept that enables effective usage of resources in the field.

Formalize a plan for continued learning and involvement by becoming a regional contact person for the HLA.

It would not be possible to overstate how valuable this experience was. Small NGO’s can’t afford to ignore the opportunity to develop professional logistics skills in support of their programs. HLA membership deserves to be considered a minimum standard for our logistics staff.

As a result of my work in Haiti after the earthquake in January of this year, I have been invited to be a delegate to the International Humanitarian Logistics Association in Nairobi Kenya.

This is an opportunity to gain skills, interact with international humanitarian organizations and learn new paradigms for Haiti relief and other disasters as a National Incident Command Team member.

For me, there is no separation between my efforts to make a difference in the world and my Wiccan beliefs. It is the Goddess, which focuses me on compassion, empathy, intent and seeing the Divine in all those whom I serve.

Are you involved in serving the wider community? Come out; let our community know how your faith drives you to be of service in this world. Thousands of Pagans are involved in public service, yet we as a community are hesitant to express how our beliefs drive these efforts. Maybe, it is time we change this tendency.

Many in the community have seen me drive my vehicle with a sticker that says, “Your silence will not protect you” a sentiment that I borrowed from the Gay community. For years I have been fond of saying, “I don’t even remember where the broom closet is”.

It has always been my belief that, while honoring those who choose to remain private, it is in the interest of our community to come out and proclaim our identity as Witches. Once I lost a job due to my beliefs, fought the unjust actions of my employer and prevailed. Deep inside, a part of me has always felt that the courage to face these prejudices was a sign of the fullness of my commitment to my Wiccan path.

Well, I was wrong.

With a trip to Africa pending, I have been spending time researching my destination. With a few Google searches I had all the information I needed. It seems Africa is in critical need of individuals with the humanitarian logistics skills I possess. Another insight was that I could never live and work in Africa as an open Wiccan, and even traveling there presents some risk.

In Africa even the accusation of witchcraft leads to arrest, jail time and all to often, death. If you admit to being a Witch it is possible you have signed your own death warrant. So where does that leave me with my “high brow” open Witch theory?

Looking for my broom closet.

This process has been insightful, what risks have I really taken over the years? Truth is , not many. Who am I to champion coming out? I realize that there are many witches who remain private in their beliefs. Some fear subjecting their children to bullying, or worse. Some are in debt and cannot risk their employer’s reactions. Others live in a community where they would be ostracized and lose all they have. With no children at home, a secure employment situation and a supportive community of friends, all I have ever risked is offending some right wing extremist.

There is one person I have offended, myself. This process has left me wondering at the arrogance of someone who promotes others to actions he himself has not taken, namely me. To my fellow Witches, I apologize for this affront. To myself, I commit to not lose sight of honoring the choices others make. I am not in their shoes and should not advocate that others make the same choices as I have.

So will I go to Africa? Yes, there is important work to be done. I will, however, take a large suitcase in which I intend pack my long lost broom closet.

Haiti and Dissociative Amnesia

Haiti, my dreams are still filled with your suffering. Did I come away from being of service in Haiti irreparably scarred, with images permanently burned in my memory? When I speak of your continued suffering why do the eyes of others glaze over?

Today, Haiti is lost to a never-ending cycle of unkept promises, continued suffering and the psychological process of dissociative amnesia. We as a society are unable to hold the reality of the continued crisis in our collective consciousness. We have done our part, responded when the world identified Haiti as a priority, pledged our efforts and funds to relieve this perfect storm of human misery, and moved on.

While this dissociative process has allowed me focus on other interests, my religious community and the continuing disaster in the Gulf, for example, it is also a process that leaves the people of Haiti alone in their efforts to recover.

Other forces that have combined to stall the effort to rebuild Haiti include political posturing by politicians, endemic corruption and a lack of logistical infrastructure. Hundreds of millions of dollars are on hold with little hope of resolution in the near future.

Even worse, the small effective NGO’s that our Pagan community has supported have experienced severe reductions in contributions. While we may not be able to clear the logjam of international aid, our attention has also turned from those organizations that are doing an outstanding job.

This week 100% for Haiti completed construction of a school in Haiti. Due to funding limitations this school consists of plywood, a tin roof and a dirt floor. Today this organization is finding it difficult to supply chairs for the children due to reduced donations.

Among other projects, Haiti Community Support has established a permanent medical clinic which is providing free healthcare, yet the organization struggles with obtaining funding for the most basic of medical and dental supplies.

Two organizations doing great work, which our community has supported, are facing a humanitarian crisis with limited resources. In addition to the challenges in funding, these organizations also deal with obstacles in government regulation and establishing effective logistical support in a third world country.

With a background in disaster logistics, it is my intent to expand my abilities to address these issues. Logistics on the international stage present challenges that I will need new skills to meet.

Recently, I was honored to be invited to the International General Assembly of the Humanitarian Logistics Association in Nairobi Kenya. Attending this conference is an opportunity to learn how effective humanitarian organizations are operating, to interact with logisticians who have extensive experience providing relief in third world countries and to develop my skills in support of our efforts in Haiti.

With the generous help of a donor, I am able to attend this General Assembly in November. It is my intent to take the skills and connections I make at this event and offer them in support of the small NGO’s that have enjoyed the support of our community.

Bringing a more complex understanding of logistical issues and solutions to the table will set the stage for the continued growth of our efforts. This focus on developing my skills is a direct result of how personal this issue is for me. Millions have shed tears for Haiti, but the time has come to focus all the emotional energy on direct and rational action that can make a difference.

Whether you can afford to donate your time for direct action, or are able to provide financial support, I urge you to reestablish your commitment to the relief efforts in Haiti. We know who is providing effective relief to the people of Haiti and they deserve our assistance. Lives are being saved and children educated for a brighter future.

We were all traumatized by the images of Haiti after the earthquake, however our human tendency towards dissociative amnesia threatens to obscure and wash away all the progress we have made. This Samhain, as we remember 250,000 lives lost in Haiti, let us turn our attention back to the continuing crisis, make a commitment to support these causes long term and join together to make a lasting difference in Haiti.

Samhain and the Yellow Butterfly, Re Post for Mothers Day

Dark thoughts, gentle joys, regrets, gratitude and self-reflection are experiences that consume me as Samhain approaches. Not surprising given my journey in this life. Born in 1961, I came of age in the 1970’s, during the generation of Sex Drugs and Rock & Roll. Over the years my secret desire to be born into a more meaningful generation has always haunted me. Viewing the generation that preceded mine, the 60’s, love, peace and the idea that individuals can change the world left me feeling as if I was born a decade to late.

Like many teens I fully engaged in the activities of my generation. For me, the self-indulgent message of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” was more influential in my young life than thoughts of creating a better world. For years, my mother witnessed her child sink progressively lower into behaviors that were self-destructive. While her disappointment was evident, when my behaviors lead me to a dead end, she always picked me up, comforted me and expressed her love. She was truly a remarkable woman. Eventually, in a moment of dark despair, her unconditional love saved my life. Through her I learned to have compassion for others, to believe that I had a purpose in life and that love is powerful and beyond all rational understanding.

It is an understatement to say that her love created a true metamorphosis in who I am. Suddenly I wanted to be like my mom, engaged in service to others, seeking truth and meaning in life, and above all compassionate. This quest led to spiritual seeking that included Native American beliefs and eventually the Pagan community. As a new Pagan I learned about the Goddess and I began to see my mother and the values she exemplified as aspects of the Sacred Feminine. Within this new community I felt safe and supported by others who shared my values.

Over the years I honored my mother whenever I could, always sending her yellow roses, her favorite color. During this time of growth I was struggling with a most basic human question. What do I truly believe in my heart? Yes I shared with the Pagan community common values, honoring the earth, the seasons, the concept of the sacred feminine, but on a deeper level I was unsure of the existence the Goddess, Magik, and if life transcends this existence.

It was at my mother’s funeral that she provided me with the answers to these questions. As my family gathered in a church garden to burry her ashes I was overwhelmed with grief, the words of my brother, sister and father seemed far away, I was going to miss her so much. Each of us placed a handful of dirt over the box of her ashes, returning her to Gaia. We each stood in silence lost in our own thoughts.

Through my tears and grief, I noticed movement to my left and a single yellow butterfly glided through the warm spring air and landed on the spot where we had just laid my mom to rest. In that moment, a Wiccan was born, my mother had come to comfort me and say there is real Magik. Since then I have always believed that life transcends this existence, that Magik is real, finding its greatest expression in love.

Mom, as I sit here writing this in tears, you have my gratitude for all you gave me, the unconditional love, your belief in me, the knowledge that I can make a difference in the world and my understanding of the meaning of life. Never will I forget your final words to me, spoken as a yellow butterfly, Love is Magik and Magik is real.

Capture the Flag, Our Approach to Pagan Rights?

Recently our community was justifiably proud to see a Pagan Chaplain receiving an award for religious pluralism from the Hindu American Foundation. We have come a long way in gaining acceptance for earth-based traditions.

This event was also an opportunity to view how another minority community organizes its activities in support of gaining religious tolerance and acceptance on a national scale. Hindus number around two million in the United States, roughly twice the number of the Neo Pagan community. In terms of organization, the Hindu community has banded together and created a national voice on Hindu rights and acceptance. This organization has an office in Washington DC that works full time addressing the issues of civil rights, tolerance and religious pluralism.

So here is the question; are we as a community even half as effectively organized to gain or defend rights for Pagans?

It is tempting to provide a long list of organizations and individuals doing great work for Pagan rights in response to this question. Each of these deserves our respect for all they have accomplished.

Instead, lets address if this plethora of activities is keeping us from acting with unanimity? Is our approach analogous to a group of organizations playing Capture the Flag, where there are wins, but only by small groups and not the community as a whole? Does our duplication of effort squander resources and reflect that Paganism still needs to mature into an effective movement?

Addressing these questions requires putting aside both organizational self-interest and ego. There is no threat in engaging in discussion about the effectiveness of our efforts. Creating a process where our community can “keep eyes on the prize” serves the community as a whole.

We have many traditions that rigorously defend their independence in spiritual practice. This is a strength that allows all to have a voice and a personal relationship with the Devine. We should however, examine if this culture has led to the inability to truly unify in supporting goals that serve the entire community.

The Hindu community is a good example, a religious tradition that has many paths (sects), coming together to achieve their common interest. Efforts have been made to form an organization that serves this role in our community. None have achieved widespread and focused support. Each is a player in the metaphorical game of capture the flag.

There are, on the horizon, new models for achieving our goals. One of these is the example of Patrick McCollum, with a proven track record of fighting for the rights of all Pagan’s, Rev. McCollum sets an example for unity of action. While I personally support his efforts, only time will tell if we are ready to express our collective intent and financial support community wide.

Currently, Rev. McCollum and many other Pagan Rights Activists are spending their own funds, sacrificing their home lives and personal financial security in support of our rights. These individuals, who enjoy our spiritual support, deserve our corporeal support in the form of funds and active participation in creating a unified Pagan Rights Organization.

This call to action is not intended to address the efforts of our diverse community of Interfaith Activists. We as a community are well served by having interfaith representatives from different paths. It is in the area of civil rights, legal challenges, lobbying and legislative action where we need to come together as one voice.

If you are involved in guiding a Pagan organization, at any level, this is a call to start a discussion on how to unify our approach to Pagan rights beyond the boundaries of our traditions and established efforts. Avoid the temptation to offer your group as the answer, be open to unique ideas, and work together with other organizations in a unified effort.

One million Pagans, with one voice and collective intent can achieve the goals we have in common.

The Solitary Defense

There has been much said in the community in recent years about the emergence of solitary practice as the primary choice of individuals coming into our community. Recently a member of the Pagan press asked me how this affects the future of Wiccan and Pagan organizations. As a solitary who is involved with several Pagan organizations, it seemed a reasonable question, to which I had no answer.

Over several months, it has been my intent to seek the insight needed to address this question. My un-scientific inquiry was focused on the effects on Pagan organizations and not the inherent value of a Solitary vs. Coven experience of the craft, a subject that has been over debated if anything.

Solitaries I have spoken to have been deeply involved with Pagan issues via public rituals, the Internet and Pagan organizations. Not surprising, considering these are the Solitaries who are the most visible. This group has brought new energy, openness and insight to our Pagan organizations.

But what of the complete Solitaries, those who practice alone and do not engage in the larger Pagan community? Gathering insights from this group was more difficult. Seeking those who wish not to be found would be intrusive, unethical and beyond what I was willing to do to satisfy my curiosity.

Over several months, I have been able to speak to a few Solitary Witches who I have noticed wearing a pentagram and in one case had a sign in her place of business saying, “The Witch is in”. While I am sure they have deeply meaningful practices their reaction to being engaged was an eye opening experience for me. While all were willing to speak to me, each gave the same answer to my questions.

Question: Have you ever supported a Pagan rights organization or cause?

Answer: I am a Solitary

Additional questions concerning following Pagan discrimination cases, giving to organizations that fight for Pagan rights and joining a national organization were met with variations of the same response.

Each time this response was given there was a pause and blank stare as if “I am a Solitary” was some magik phrase that explained everything. For the purpose of this piece let’s call this the “Solitary Defense”.

There are many potential explanations for these responses. Most have been well discussed, past Witch wars, bad community experiences, an individual experience of the Devine etc. What interests me is not how they developed their views but how it effects our organizations.

These are Pagans who appear to make no connection between their ability to openly display their faith and the years of work by Pagan organizations that has gone into gaining acceptance for them. With no interest in furthering Pagan causes, these individuals are unlikely allies for Pagan organizations.

Clearly, the advent of Pagans who use the “Solitary Defense” effects our ability to bring the community together in the continuing effort to gain Pagan rights and acceptance. We have had many successes in establishing civil rights for Pagans. It would be a shame if they are eroded by a trend towards apathy and disengagement form the greater Pagan community.

This course of investigation did leave me with the impression we are the victims of our own success. As a result of the efforts of our Pagan organizations, many can now openly express their faith preference. While we celebrate this success, let us pause to educate our new community members on how their rights were achieved and the importance of defending all we have gained.

Yes, I am a Solitary, for me this title means,

I practice my craft alone

I Honor all paths to the Devine

I defend the rights of others to approach the Goddess in their own way

I am willing to learn and grow in my faith

I engage in activities that support the spiritual health of my community

I support those organizations that have gained for me the rights I enjoy

To my Solitary sisters and brothers who support Pagan causes, you are a shining light that brings a rich tapestry of experience to the Pagan community

To Solitaries who practice in secret for their own safety, you are not alone and are supported in your faith.

To those who use the “Solitary Defense” While I honor your decision to seek the Devine alone, let me suggest you consider transforming your spiritual beliefs into spiritual responsibility.

From misery to hope in Haiti

After 16 days operating a small neighborhood clinic in Haiti, I wish I could report that all is well. It is not. Devastation from January's earthquake, malnutrition, lack of clean water, lack of sanitation, poverty and endemic corruption have combined to create a perfect storm of human misery.

From the first day in Haiti, it was evident that this disaster would be a life-changing event. Daily exposure to extreme injuries among these children of despair created indelible images in the minds of many who responded.

A baby dying from lack of food, a 5-year-old with one side of his face torn off, bodies piled one on top of another — these mental photographs are etched in my mind.

 With years of professional experience responding to disasters in the United States, traveling to Haiti as a volunteer Medical Unit Leader with Haiti Community Support (haitisupport.org) seemed both the right thing to do and something for which I was prepared.

  This disaster however, proved me wrong. Devastation and human suffering on an unimaginable scale, coupled with the incredible resilience of the Haitian people, overwhelmed my ability to keep a professional detachment. Haiti, as anyone who has been there recently can attest, is personal.   

Some might expect that in the middle of this catastrophic event there was little reason for hope, but that expectation is wrong.

  In Haiti there were no white people or black people. There were no rich or poor. There were no Christians, Jews, Muslims or Pagans. There was no cultural divide. Language was not a barrier: All spoke the language of compassion with their eyes. All that divides us was forgotten.   Everyone was united by common humanity.

If there is a profound lesson from this disaster, let it be what this world is capable of when united in their humanity.

1,000.000 Neo-Pagans, we are many, we are strong, we have a voice, we are ready to make a difference at the polls, vote with our dollars, and stand up to discrimination. We are not only out of the broom closet, we are at the table demanding our rights.

Gratitude and compassion are the product of intent. To give and receive openly without expectation or agenda.

Once civil rights are gained, it is incumbent on us to stand guard in their defense. Nothing could be worse than apathy eroding all we have gained.

The quest for riches leads people to falsely believe they are poor.

Passion fills the sails of my heart, yet as I have grown older, it is reason that sets the course.

Islamophobia A Threat to the Pagan Community

From rural Wisconsin to lower Manhattan Americans are mobilizing in opposition to the location of Islamic places of worship in their communities. With images of September 11th etched in it’s collective subconscious, our nation is once again traversing the slippery slope that leads to religious persecution, fear and outright bigotry.

Islam has become the convenient target of defamation, hate, suspicion and direct verbal attacks. Americans in ever growing numbers freely tell anti Islamic jokes in public places. If these attacks were aimed at another faith, minority or ethnic group there would surly be a substantial backlash.

So why should the Neo Pagan community become involved in defending the rights of a belief system that holds views so foreign to our earth based community?

Islam, an incredibly diverse group of faiths, is faced with being branded as intolerant and violent due to the actions of radical fringe groups. We in the Pagan community have experienced attempts to paint us all with the same brush when individuals who claim to be Pagan commit violent acts. Recent events in New Mexico and Australia make this clear.

To stand by and allow these forms of attack encourages those who believe that our country should not be tolerant of a diversity of beliefs. If we do not stand in support of inclusion and respect we risk our own fight for Pagan rights through our lack of action.

There are many well-meaning people who have expressed concern with the placement of the Mosque in New York City. There are others, however, who have taken this opportunity to spread fear, hate, and bigotry. They must be confronted

All threats to religious rights and tolerance are a threat to our community, our nation and our ability to openly worship the divine as we please.

It is not easy to come to the defense of a belief system so different than ours. Nor was it easy for Christian, Jewish and Islamic leaders to support the inclusion of Pagans in the interfaith movement. Yet, these leaders did it because it was the right thing to do. Now comes our opportunity to stand for what we believe.

Pagan Brothers and Sisters, join me in communicating to the Islamic community our support for their right to worship openly, when they want to and where they want to. Confront those who oppose tolerance, Make our collective intent known.

Directionally Challenged Pagans

Directionally Challenged Pagans

Some of us have had the experience of helping to set up a ritual site and the gentle amusement that comes with a group of directionally challenged Pagans debating witch direction is witch. It also seems that the larger the gathering the more vocal the debate. We, well known practitioners, unsure of the directions, each slightly embarrassed.

While this situation has brought me much amusement, as a directionally challenged Pagan my self, it also serves as a great metaphor for our own Pagan paths. Our community has grown ever more complex with the passage of time. Constantly we are faced with choices as to what direction to send our energies in service to our communities.

Once we place our own practice, covens, and families first we are then
confronted with a “witches brew” of alternatives. What next, interfaith, environmental work, music, public information, teaching, legal advocacy, direct action, education? What is a directionally challenged Pagan to do?

Metaphorically, each direction represents a different path, but how to decide? One could gather the facts, view the alternatives, consider the appeal of each and make a decision. Yet, looking outward for answers on how to direct our spiritual intent seems counterintuitive.

Consider instead looking first at our selves, taking a sincere look at our skills, abilities and personal traits. Seeking next the counsel of our Pagan kin, these sisters and brothers to whom we have sacred ties are well equipped to provide invaluable feedback and insight.

Finally, if the arrow on the metaphorical compass still wavers, seek out Elders of the Pagan community. To often these Crones and Sages are only consulted on maters of import to the entire community. It is their season for wisdom and we should take advantage of all that they have to offer.

These suggestions equate to being the only directionally challenged Pagan who brings a compass to a ritual. Sometimes we all just need the right tools prior to taking action.

911 Ritual for Tolerance and Remembrance

Many in our community have expressed shock and dismay at the trend towards religious intolerance that has developed as the anniversary of 911 approaches. As a response, the following short ritual is provided as a way that we can express our collective intent for a peaceful and tolerant world on September 11, 2010.

In calling the quarters and inviting the Lord and the Lady care should be taken to summon deities and energies that represent openness, compassion, understanding, knowledge etc.

Items needed

One bowl

Tea lights

Five candles

Small pieces of paper

Small piece of string

On a table or altar, place the bowl in the center, place the candles at five equal points around the bowl to be lit as each blessing is brought forward. Around the five points place a circle of tea lights; each will represent one of the world’s religions. Write the names of world religions on the small pieces of paper to correspond with the number of tea lights placed.

All present are asked to begin by invoking the divine to be present. (Quiet contemplation). Then start lighting the candles.

“This Candle of Tolerance is kindled in support of all who believe that love and acceptance are gifts of the divine. May the Goddess bless them with compassion and patience.”

“This Candle of Understanding is kindled for all those who seek interfaith cooperation. May the Goddess bless them with courage in their ideals and success in their efforts.”

“This Candle of Unity is kindled for all who seek the divine in its many manifestations. May understanding of divinity bring unity in seeking the freedom for all to worship as they choose”.

“This Candle of Peace is kindled for those who respond with trust, kindness and charity when faced with anger, suspicion, and misunderstanding. May the Goddess bless them with eloquence. and protect them from harm”

This candle of Remembrance is kindled for all who have been lost in religious conflict. May their sacrifice be the altar upon which the world builds a tradition of Tolerance, Understanding, Unity, and Peace. May the Goddess bless the journeys of those we have lost.

Goddess and God we place now the names of many of the great traditions of divinity at the center of our ritual and our intent. May they practice their faiths in a meaningful way. May they all enjoy the freedom to worship the Divine as the please. May they go forward in Tolerance, Understanding, Unity, Peace, and Remembrance?

(Participants step forward, read the name of a faith and place it in the bowl and then kindle a corresponding tea light)

Ritual Leader, collect the pieces of paper from the bowl and tie them together with a string.

Militant Pagan

Musings of a Militant Pagan

On a recent trip to Washington D.C. to attend a Pagan event, I had an experience at the airport that has taken me time to process. This experience reminded me that as a nation we still have a long way to go in establishing a culture of tolerance for the diversity of beliefs that make up the rich fabric of American religious life.

On the surface, this event rightfully made me resentful that my beliefs could be so easily ridiculed by someone I do not know. While proceeding through security, a TSA employee noticed the pentagram and medicine bag that I wear and stated, “Oh, are you going to sprinkle fairy dust from your bag on us all?”. I was dumbfounded. In my mind, I responded with “Do you make fun of everyone’s beliefs or are you just singling me out?”. Silence and a smile was what this individual received as a response.

Once upon a time, there would have been an indignant response, demands to speak with a supervisor and a letter to the Director of TSA. So what has changed? First, the Feminine Divine has taught me compassion. No longer do I feel the need to confront and be ‘right’. Through the Goddess I have learned to see narrow-minded views as a human condition from which we all suffer from time to time. How can I withhold compassion from this stranger and still be able to express compassion for those whom I know, yet disagree with?

Next, I have come to understand that changing society’s attitude is a matter of interfaith and civil rights activism. This individual’s ability to develop insight is most likely to be influenced by leaders of his own faith or tolerance being codified in the culture where he is employed. Having a conflict with a “Militant Pagan” would only serve to embolden his narrow view of religion.

Finally, participating in a confrontation driven by indignation could have resulted in my forgoing an important task, going to DC to honor an individual who has done much for Pagan rights through calm discussion and interfaith work. Choosing to address Pagan issues in a positive and constructive manner is what I was traveling to honor.

While passion for Pagan rights still fills the sails of my heart, as I have grown in my faith, it is reason that sets my course. Yes I am still a Militant Pagan, yes I still speak truth to power, but I will choose my battles, direct my intent and assist my community in obtaining acceptance through positive action that has a chance of success.

Young Lives

Young Lives

Do you remember being 13 years old? I certainly do, the sence that I was becoming a separate person from my family, aware, in my adolescent way. Internal conflicts swirled as I tried to figure out who I was. Concerns about where I fit in the social fabric, who were friends and who to avoid. I also remember thinking that my whole life was in front of me.

Well, meet 13 year old Asher Brown, this bright child will never get to be the man he could of become. Asher committed suicide in August after intense abuse from his schoolmates concerning his sexual orientation.

While I am introducing people let me introduce 13-year-old Seth Walsh who on September 19 of this year left this world by his own hand. Seth’s 11 year old brother called him "the best big brother in the world, no, the galaxy." Seth too was the victim of ridicule from his classmates concerning his being Gay. Another young man we will never meet.

Of course lets not forget 18-year-old Tylor Clenenti and 19-year-old Raymond Chase. Both of these young men’s lives recently cut short by a culture that tolerates the persecution of the LGBT community.

Over the last few days, I have been reading many posts to Pagan web sites about this issue. While most have expressed shock at these events, some have offered the opinion that this is not our fight; we should “take care of our own first”. Frankly, it makes me sick to read these posts. The cruel harassment and daily humiliation these kids faced is beyond any concept of acceptable human behavior.

Are the memories of our community so short that we do not remember twelve-year-old Tempest Smith who hanged herself a number of years ago? This wonderful child was tormented for her Pagan beliefs until she could no longer endure.

So why is this our issue? Because it is a religious issue. It is the unrelenting homophobic and anti Pagan messages that some religious communities espouse that creates a climate were our children are driven to take their own lives. This must stop and we must take a stand. Elders throughout our community need to address this issue, take a stand and most of all take action. If we do not act the next 13 year old we hear about may be one of the young faces we see at our circles.

It is time to get involved. Call the local schools and ask about anti bullying programs. Where they exist, support them. Where they do not, create them. Talk to your kids, find out about incidents of bullying, report these incidents and follow up to make sure action has been taken.

While it is important for our community to make a statement about these events, it is vital that we take action beyond reading and writing about them.
